To be honest I don't know why you're getting so defensive about this DDM. You generally come off as a very intelligent, confident and, yes, smug person. its not like anyones perfect. I just noted that you seemed more so today. I seriously didn't expect you to jump down my throat about it.

But if you want to play this game I suppose.

Fact: each universe has magical healers. That's hardly smug. When you complain about good guys being saved from death and demand that they should have died, then you must support that. The reason they survived or wear revived, in both universes, is due to "magical healers". That's not smug: that's a fact. I didn't even present it smugly. In other words, the demands that they good guys die is not supportable when you disregard that the good goods literally have magical healers (and Nagato used a mass magical healing technique that is bordering on god status).

You must have missed what I said. Did I mention anything to do with your actual argument or did I simply mention the way you said it? I'm not sure a position/argument can even be smug in and of itself.

Although btw, I'd argue that you're missing the point of what FA was complaining about. Its more to do with the greater narrative failing that arises when you establish in your setting that no wound is life-threatening. It kills all tension when you know that a character has no way of dying. Its comical how many times characters have been wounded in Bleach and Kubo expects us to still care after how many characters have survived retarded levels of punishment.

What's ACTUALLY the smug position is this:

"It's one thing to have a manga that you need to have suspension of disbelief, but when you have a manga that's fairly violent and geared towards mature audiences, you don't write it like it's My Little Pony. Characters, especially ones that have remained in the manga for a long time, surviving despite the stupid situations they're in (Pain attacking Konoha, Fake Karakura) ruins the plot. "

Hint: I didn't say that.

Again we obviously just have different ideas on smugness because I don't see anything wrong with that at all.

That was intended as humor and for him to get a laugh. Hence the smilie at the end.

He was actually "mad bro" and I was trying to be lighthearted about it.

As a general rule, when someone is pissed, its a bad idea to laugh at them and expect them to laugh back. It just makes them angrier.

HINT.

Here's something smug for you:

When you approach someone's post with the "I'm definitely on my period" attitude, obviously, you'll take that person's post as negatively as possible without considering that there are other interpretations or intentions to the original poster's words. In other words, stop approaching posts like you're on your period and think about other interpretations (positive ones) to posts. Like, "he posted that smilie because he intended that to be humor. Definitely not a serious business post."

Instead, you went the opposite and selected for the "rage" interpretation: "ZOMG! He's LAUGHING at someone in a debate! Let's get him! RAAAAAAWR!"

Again, I'm unsure where this hostility is coming from. If you're trying to pick a fight with me could you at least tell me straight up. At the moment I'm simply confused at how you're 'okay with labels' but that you're getting so butthurt over it.

I also don't know where you got the impression I was trying to 'get you'. Perhaps if you attempted to comprehend my posts like less of a pissy little manchild you wouldn't feel the need to write out all this self-indulgent horseshit. 🙂

As it is, that was simply an example. I got the impression out of reading all of your posts and finding them to be unusually condescending. Hence my question. I was actually wondering if anything had happened to piss you off.

In the future, you should ask first. You should ask, "dadudemon, are you being a jerk or are you being lighthearted? It looks like you're being a jerk, to me." Then I can clarify. Then we can avoid discussions where I point out why you've got a faulty parser when when reading posts.

Thats a good suggestion, but I think that in the future I'll simply remind myself how much of a ****ing chore it is to have a conversation with you and then decide not to bother.

That's odd, because that's also my exact reply to what you said here:

"Not being evil doesn't automatically make you good."

But my point was that your point is invalid because I already covered the gray area character placement AND I was focusing on the good guys and what defines one.

So this applies to you:

"Not being evil doesn't automatically make you good."

and

"And you might have a point if we weren't talking about Good Guys dying."

and

"You might have a point if I had not already mentioned "gray" type characters."

Go figure.

So you're saying that since you mentioned 'grey' characters already then Stark can't be a 'grey' character? To be honest you're being very confusing on this issue and I don't care enough to try to understand your logic. I assumed that you thought of Stark as a morally grey character because that is essentially what he is. But apparantly you think he's a good guy so maybe not.

Incorrect: his main character trait is being with someone. Apathy is his secondary character trait and it is actually a superficial one: it's just for show because he really does care.

And following your commander's orders is hardly a good enough reason to call him "evil". He went because he was ordered and he wanted to avoid fighting. He wanted to have friends that could stand his presense and he found them: so he would do as he's ordered so he can keep his friends. Sounds evil, right? RAWR! 😆

Hint: that last statement was intended to be a smug statement. It was to illicit a laugh about how unserious I think this discussion is. Obviously, it doesn't sound evil. Obviously, Starrk's apathy towards Aizen's actions could seem evil. Obviously, none of us are getting ragy. I hope that helps clarify that this is not serious business like you're trying to make it out to be.

Not really. Thats a motivation, it is not a character trait, which is to do with behaviour and general demeaner as opposed to psychological issues.

Again, I specifically said that I don't see him as evil. But anyone who is prepared to murder a town of innocent people for their own selfish purposes is not someone I could ever term as a good person. At best, he is neutral.

Well unfortunately that laugh failed. I'm angry. To be honest I seriously don't believe that you intended to illicit laughter from me. We've talked enough that I think you knew that your comments would piss me off. If you really aren't taking any of this seriously and sincerely meant no disrespect then I'm prepared to accept an apology and to advise you to actually think about what you're typing next time you decide to act out your passive-aggressive tantrums.

Reading my post, it reads off as more assertive than I would like it to be.

Stfu I have a headache and am tired.

I wasn't being serious with my mean things dadudemon. 🙁

Aizen and his allies were planning to do this. They aren't the heroes. Unless you want to defend their actions?

Yeah, it's easy to see why the Espada were tricked by Aizen. Aizen claimed to want to topple the evil Shinigami from their wicked ways (genocide against the Quincy? Come OOOON, people...how can Aizen's actions against toppling the Shinigami seem completely evil? It's not that evil. 😐 )

Additionally, the espada that I listed are the ones that I did not consider being evil: Harribel and Starrk.

And no, it just being Aizen's idea isn't a defense.

Just cause you say so I now can't use it? I apologize, but I reject your statement (Neph, that was a genuine apology. I do not wish to offend Aura so I apologized for the words seeming smug presentation because they may come off as offensive. Do you see the difference yet in two different ways to interpret posts?).

It was Aizen's idea and they did not necessarily support it.

By your rationale, every last soldier deployed to Iraq during the Iraq war was evil because it resulted in the killing of thousands of innocents.

For a real world example, one of my employees just raged to me earlier today(I didn't say anything, he was complaining about one of his ignorant professors) about why that's the dumbest and stupidest argument he's ever heard. He quite school over it. That's how offensive such an argument is to some people (the argument that a person is evil because they follow the orders of their comanding officers which results in them doing bad things in retrospect of such orders).

The fact that these guys were loyal means they'd participate in the creation of the Royal Key, which involved killing innocent people. They aren't as guilty as Aizen, but guilty they are.

(Are you forgetting that the Espada had to devore thousands of hollow before gaining legitimate sapience?) They did not have to take any actions. Aizen knew that they would move the town. So it would appear that they all knew that they were just going to fight Shinigami. Seems like your reasoning is shaky at best, but comletely incorrect at worst. Why did Aizen bring them along if all they had to do was kill the town? Are the Espada really that dumb? I mean...did they think Aizen needed them to kill 100,000 people and convert their spiritual energy? What do you think?

I don't think you're right. I remember something being said about destroying konoha before he even went there. Destorying Konoha was always part of the plan. It wasn't a spite to Tsunade.

Danzo is not a shinobi by his own definition. And I could care less what he felt.

Ahhh, but you see, it is how people feel about themselves and their actions that truly reveal how evil they are.

For instance, if you think it is wrong to step with your left foot off of a curb and you go about your life intentionally stepping off curbs with your left foot, that would be an evil action. It is a relative evil action, of course, because it only applies to that person (because you and I do not believe it to be evil so it is not evil when we do it). However, it is evil to them and they are doing it to be evil therefore, we can say as an outside impartial party that they are doing something evil by their own estimates.

That's a very silly example and something you would cover in a philosophy class about morals (maybe even philosophy 101, depending on the professor).

So what he felt is almost paramount in determining how evil he truly was. In the end, he realized that Sarutobi was right about the luuurv and protection thing but it was too late at that point. Where did we see that recurring thing before....hmmm... 😆 (Neph, before you fly off the handle, know that I am not laughing AT Aura but I am having a laugh WITH Aura about Kishi's sometimes linear writing style. Do you see, now, why you should try for a more positive view on posting intentions?)

Actions define a character and by Danzo's actions, he's not a good guy.

That's true only if you're a deontologist and also subscribe to moral absolutism in your personal philosophy. Personally, I believe in an amalgamation of philosophies with an emphasis on virtue ethics: I hold that some things are morally absolute, some things are morally relative, and some things are neuter.

But to actually address this, even you can admit that Danzo's motivations were for the ultimate good and prosperity of the Fire Country.

The manga makes it clear that Danzo was completely in the wrong. He wanted to bring about world peace by putting himself in charge. Funny, Kira tried to do this and everyone thinks he is a villain.

I agree: that was Danzo's goal and it was wrong. But it wasn't relatively evil and he thought he was doing right. This is the difference between an evil character, a good character making bad choices, and a good character. Danzo is between the middle and the last choice. To put it in real philosophical terms, Danzo would be a pragmatic ethicist and possibly a consequentialist: hardly legitimately evil. I believe is was Nemebro that argued that Danzo was the most correct because his resulted in the most practical overall good (because Neme is leet like that).

I don't know who this Kira character is (Bleach?)

Were they? Cause I never read that. It seemed like it was obvious they would go there to defeat the Shinigami, not murder 100,000 people. What do you think? (Neph, again, here is an example of something you would call smug but it isn't. There are two readings to it: one is the smug, rhetorical reading. The other, my intention, is a genuine interest in further dialogue in figuring out the Espada's intentions. I am still not convinced 100% that they were righteous OR evil by going to the town...I can still be swayed. Does it make more sense, now?)

My response is the same response that you have: how and what I actually stated were not smug: it was your incorrect interpretation that is leading you to believe that. I had to explain what the statement meant in expanded terms so you could understand that there were two ways to interpret what I had stated (I am not assigning a binary value to the interpretation of my words. I am only stating that there are at least two interpretations and I get the final say-so in what my words meant.)

The point itself is not what is being discussed: I was simply expanding on how my point was not smug but only misunderstood by you.

When you establish that ALMOST no wound is life-threatening (you never saw the video of the Korean dude that was cut in half at his waist but was still alive moving his arms around? Sick video...but it shows us quite clearly that Miss B*tch could survive, even in the real world, with such an injury), we should fully expect the good guys (due to their more altruistic nature towards each other...because, hey, they are the "good" guys, right?) to heal each other with their magical regeneration powers. Most of the injuries presented could be survived in the real world. Riruka's current injury is one of the worst suffered, thus far: severing the left subclavian artery is serious business because death can come in less than am minute from cutting right through it. So i would agree that we have hit the point of an injury that would be assspulled if they survived it without some quick healing. Ichigo's cut slash by Aizen? He got immediate attention. Myori's legs and hips getting cutt off? Survivable even in the real world (want me to link you to the video to that dude? He "runs" around with a lower body cybernetic thingie now...er something. Like Darth Maul, lol). Kenpachi's injuries would result in bleeding out if not tended to rather quickly after his fight (and he gets them tended to by Inoue...forces her to, rather). There's a whole bunch of other stuff that I am not remembering but there's been no ultimately serious injuries occur that often. In Rangaku's case, she was tended to immediately: within seconds. So not that many injuries have been utterly and inexorbly life-threatening without them getting medical attention very quickly.

I assumed that you thought of Stark as a morally grey character because that is essentially what he is. But apparantly you think he's a good guy so maybe not.

No, you brought up, basically, that I am creating a false dichotomy because people can be gray at times.

I responded with, "I already acknowledged that some characters can be gray."

Then you responded that I might have a poing if we weren't talking about the good guys dying when:

1. That was one of the things I originally considered responding to you with (and since I obviously believe Starrk to be an overall good guy) but discarded for my "I already acknowledged gray character types".

2. You can't tell me that when you're the one that got off track about gray characters.

So, basically, my response to your response to my response is the same response you originally replied with, plus your response to my response to your original statement, plus my original response to your original statement to illustrate that we had already talked this subject into a circle and there is not need to continue it because we were making the same points to each other.

Confused even more? I could make a youtube video for you and I could narrate, with pictures, how that explanation works together. It would take like an hour to do that. Man... I don't want to. But if you really want me to explain that out in visuals, I can.

I disagree and this is why:

His primary character trait is one of belonging. The motivations that result from that are a gravitation towards other characters to which he can belong without killing them. He's an unwanted puppy. Hardly and evil character.

I will continue to make stupid oonomatopoeia's at the end of my posts that seem too serious when I do not intend them to be serious. You said you were angry. Your anger is showing through, now. I see that. I have never once been angry about this whole conversation. As Aura stated, I have become bored with it. That's not a curb stomp, though. Kenpachi is just a monster (an evil character, to a point). They both did not come out unscathed. Looks like they got knocked around. That's not a curb stomp.

Let me bring about why I don't think it is a curb stomp:

So random power-up after Ichigo dies that crushes the villain without a fight is your favorite defeat of a bad guy?

And you wonder why people criticise your taste.

1. It wasn't random. Ichigo had "flashes" of power ups and actual powers ups since the beginning of the series. At that point, we knew he would come back from the seeming dead OR something else would happen like Ulq pulling a "Chiyo" for Ichgo or something. We all knew he wasn't dead.

2. Ulq already said that sometimes Ichigo's power fluctuates above his own: foreshadowed.

3. Ichigo never truly died.

4. The fighting had lasted many many chapters before that point.

5. How is that power-up any different than the ragey super awesome manly power up that is known as the Super Saiyan? Surely you would agree that the Super Saiyan power up (foresahadowed, as well) again Frieza was so badass. It was one of the most awesome things to have occured in manga history.

People criticize my taste because they do not realize there I have considered other factors, it makes their own assessments appear hypocritical if they think about it, and taste is subjective so everyone can go **** themselves if they think I should change what I enjoy in fictional storesi (that's not meant as an insult. I think everyone should hold that opinion and not get so butthurt when someone disagrees with them about their opinion).

Well, no. The moment Kenpachi fought seriously was the momenth he took his eyepatch off. He was extremely excited. When he had to use his kendo tricks he learned from the Captain Commander, it was a tactic he was using to save his own life. Kenpachi also called the power different "double" or something. No, I was not being smug comparing your belief in the manga to My Little Pony, as I was stating it as an actual fact. Naruto and Bleach fundamentally follow the same formula. Bad guys show up. Bad guys cause problems for good guys. Good guys suffer little to no permanent harm. Good guys defeat bad guys. The only difference is the graphic content. I was also not insulting your taste. It is in my opinion that the plot-formula to Bleach and Naruto is stupid, hence, I will refer to it as such. If you like it, that's cool, I really could care less, you're allowed to like whatever you want. If I wanted to insult your tastes and be all smug about the comparison, I would have compared Bleach to, say, Twilight, which is actually a much more accurate comparison, not to mention I would have been more prone to actively insulting you and such things.

......

Bleach and Naruto are leagues above Twilight. Harry Potter might have been a more apt comparison.

Harry Potter >>>> Bleach and Naruto.

I actually can't agree to that. Maybe Bleach, because it does drag, but not Naruto.

You're misunderstanding what I'm saying.

In Twilight, how many of the good guys died?

Asides from that one vampire girl that Meyer tried to impress upon us as "good", 0.

How many of the bad guys died?

Everyone who actively fought against the Cullens, with the antagonists of the last book backing out of the fight at the last second.

EDIT:

I actually like how Harry Potter killed off its good characters for the most part. Asides from getting a bit carried away in the last book, maybe, I think it was well done.

Nah. You don't get to say that it wasn't smug. It's smug. There's no "wiggle" room, like in my posts, where I am using both self-parody and making light of how serious business the convo is getting.

You directly compared my opinion to being like the story telling of my little pony. There's no way out of that: it was smug. You were "mad" bro. You also called it stupid. I don't care, however. I am used to people raging about shounen manga for reasons that are generally not legit. I already explained to you why the good guys rarely experience losses.

Additionally, I prefer Twilight over MLP. Have you ever seen an episode of MLP (old, middle, or new stuff). It's horrendous!

Indeed. But then again, Bleach would still be superior. They at least have had their good guys fail at times, something that Twilight does not have.

I don't really need deaths in a story. I just need something to make shit sad. Bleach just lacks a lot of that as is.

Indeed. Though there are several problems with them.

Then again, Naruto has killed off precisely the same types of characters. 😛

My Little Pony >>>> Bleach. 😐

And if you get to claim you weren't being smug, so does FA.

Nah man, now you're being smug by lording over the decision of what is smug and what is not smug.

I could care less about your opinion, I was comparing how Bleach and Naruto rarely, or in Bleach's case, never kills off its good characters. I did not call your opinion stupid, I called the recent writing of Bleach and Naruto stupid. Just like how I will call Justin Bieber's music stupid and American politics stupid and the Kardashians stupid.

Ahahahahahahaha

My Little Pony, at least the new show, despite being geared towards little girls, is still better then Twilight. Twilight is objectively a horribly written piece of garbage that has no right being a best seller.

Also, you're insulting a show that I happen to watch and enjoy, you better stop being smug. 🙁

The Cullen clan, the largest clan outside of the Volturi, are somehow supposed to die against 2-3 vampire attackers? That doesn't make sense. The threatened people were never the Cullen clan. It was human Bella. Bella had, at one point, over 10 Werewolves and over 6 vampires protecting her from one single vampire: Victoria. That's ridiculous. Of course none of the badguys are going to lose.

Weven when 20 new borns were sent to attack the Cullen Clan, the Cullen clan got backup from the Werewolves. Additionally, they had a newborn killing specialist among them that trained them all. They did get injuries: Jacob and Seth. Edward almost died if it weren't for Bella's last minute blood letting (close call). So it is not as though there is opposition.

A story does not always have to be about who dies.

When the Volturi came to destroy the Cullen clan, it was Bella's protectie shield that prevented the masacre. Something she worked on creating for ages and ages (but didn't finish until there was a very real threat to her loved ones). Even so, amen.
