ROTS as a stand alone movie also sucks: very depressing ending, incomprehensible stuff between OB1 and Anakin. Apart from ANH, NO SW movie can stand alone. Even TPM... I mean, so they found the chosen one... now what? The same goes for all the other ones. I guess you can't choose any film as good except ANH... That would be lame.In conclusion, ESB is the very best of them all.
In terms of a "good movie" that EVERYONE (not just SW fans) would think is a good movie, ESB is far superior.
ESB is prolly considered to be one of THE BEST films in history.
however my personal opinion is that ROTS was a "better" movie, just because it was more exciting and just genuinely cool all around.
but, i STILL consider ROTJ my favorite of all the SW movies, it was the movie that made me love star wars, it was the movie that i watched more then any of the other SW movies when i was younger, is Empire a better movie? absolutely, but Jedi holds a special place in my heart.
so basically its
Jedi, cause i just love it, just cause
Sith, cause its action packed and kicks major ass (lightsaber style)
Empire, cause its an amazing movie in general.
theres a simple reason ESB is better, GL didnt direct it, he left it up to a ...........director.
The emotion shown in ESB matchs a feel that a lot of movies of that genre had like E.T and Close Encounters. There was always a real human edge to that old style of directing that has been lost since CGI became the preferred medium.
Its interesting to note that GL uses CGI to free up the story telling ( he has said this). But sometimes I get the feeling that if the story teller has an incredibly deep and profound imagination the digital freedom can sometimes be too much freedom and rather that spend more time focusing on character play and performance the story teller spends far too much time on enviroment detail.
I have sat back and really thought a lot about these prequal movies. I have been a starwars fan since the day I first went and saw' Starwars 'back in the 70's and my conclusion is that GL had far too much to do with the movie-making process of these latest movies. You can see it throughout the docos on the DVDs, GL always gets his way.
I think it wouldve been better if he had spent more time writing and building the plot and characters so the story had far more emotional content and we ( the audience ) could really share the rise and fall of the characters as well as empathise with both the good and evil players in the story.
I think there were far too many characters in the prequals and why GL wanted to include back stories for R2, C3po, Chewie is really a sign ( in my opinion ) of someone relying on past character success to boost the story in the latest movies.
After looking back at the prequals I have to say that the only one I mildly enjoyed for story was Ep1, in this movie GL really set up some nice characters like Qui-gon and Maul, I think he shouldve kept and built on these guys right through to ROTS like he did on the first trilogy with certain main players, instead he killed them off and put forward MORE
dudes, after that for me it just got messy. cool effects though!

^i agree with Spekdah

ESB "showed"....ROTS "told"
ESB showed a simple story with deeper complex meanings.
ROTS told a complex story and TRIED to have deep meanings but they often times just fell flat.
there WERE some emotional sequences in ROTS but i felt like it was a cartoon and the actors were thinking "now I have to cry. Now i have to be angry" instead of actually demonstrating it
Like I said, my mom who hates sci-fi enjoyed ESB because it was just a good movie that made you wonder. I think she almost fell asleep in ROTS toward the end.

Understandable. IMO I think that ROTS "showed" way more emotion than "ESB".
And that your mom feel asleep towards the end of "ROTS" is interesting. The was the best part, well to me I guess.
There are a lot of bad points to ROTS. Such as cheesy dialogue and way too much scenes following each other. Of course.. George Lucas didn't make it easy on himself with his first two PT movies but that's no excuse for making a movie this chaotic.
Don't get me wrong.. This movie made me go back to my old SW obsession but I think ESB had the best script and plot of them all.
