One of the things I think make a movie good, is was it moving. "ROTS" was moving. The 1st time I watched "ESB" I wasn't moved. Sure it was a good movie i enjoyed but it wasn't moving. Moving meaning capable of exciting and stirring emotion, or provoking/arousing deep emotion.
I connected with "ROTS" well, especially towards the end. I can't say the same for "EBS" i'll have to admit, but it's still a good flik, just not better than "ROTS", in my view
There is always the matter of taste. I do feel ESb still is anamazing film, not just an amazing SW film. That basically only goes for ANH and ESB, they stand out as great and original films that work like a charm. I am sure none of the PT films will ever get that status.
The whole thing, the script, the acting, the direction... none of the other SW movies reach this level. And even the Hoth battle scenes... they are amazing. Maybe not superduper CGI shit and all, but it's a perfect execution of a grat scene. Very unlike the messy and totally unclear crap we saw in TPM, or just the general PT approach: a lot and fast too approach.
No, ESB will stand the test of time (it already has in fact) of a great classic film . I doubt ROTS will ever reach that status.
Hey, I can understand. In effects and creatures the OT is quantity-wise the lesser brother of the PT. But story and storytelling wise they are a lot better. The technical limitations forced the filmmakers to look for other solutions to tell the story. They found them in the telling, not in bits and bytes from a computer. It also forced Lucas et al. to make clear choices in advance. Now GL wants to keep all options open till the end.
Lots of effects and pretty pics don't make a movie. It needs a soul. And I think that is main thing the PT is lacking.

I could never count "ESB" as a stand a one movie though. How can it be the greatest movie of all time. It's wasn't even complete.
What I'm saying is, is had "ESB" been the only SW movie, I'd be left shit-face and confused as hell. To give it the status of greatest movie of all time would be a massively gross overstatement. I don't consider it a movie really, i consider it a sequel. (A part of another movie).

Star Wars could possibly be the best movie of all time, yes. It's a movie that would've done well with or without sequels.
If "A New Hope" was the only SW movie, I would've been satisfied. Why? because it's a genuine movie in itself that had good against evil and a beginning, middle and ending that didn't need prequel or sequels to make it better or more understandable. You can't say that for "ESB" like you could for "ANH"
There are other sequels to movies that can stand alone as well, just not "ESB".

Sure ANH was actually the only one wich explained the SW universe and the terms used in the movie but to say a movie can't be 'the best movie ever' just because you had to have seen the first movie is weird..
With that reasoning you would have to get everything explained in a movie to call it 'omg the greatest movie evah'. Hell! Let's even explain the whole history of the world with WWII movies!!
Let's just judge on plot, tension and character building and such, okay?

ok, I think Empire is the best movie of all time - but that is MY opinion and you must respect that. It's not a fact - infact, there is NO fact to what the greatest movie of all-time is, or whether a certain song is better than another, because at the end of the day - we ALL have an opinion

ROTS as a stand alone movie also sucks: very depressing ending, incomprehensible stuff between OB1 and Anakin. Apart from ANH, NO SW movie can stand alone. Even TPM... I mean, so they found the chosen one... now what? The same goes for all the other ones. I guess you can't choose any film as good except ANH... That would be lame.
In conclusion, ESB is the very best of them all.
