Most overrated artist?

Green day is THE most overrated band in history.

Nowhere near.

No matter what you say, Pink Floyd is not overrated. If anything they are underrated. They were (and hopefully will soon be) a great band, and their music is phenomenal.

Pink Floyd UNDERrated? Are you serious?

-AC

Well according to this thread they are the most overrated band of all time. Alpha, do you like Pink Floyd?

I can listen to them now and then, yes. They're not one of my favourites. I wouldn't call them great.

They're reputation legends and they're reasonably innovative but none of their music has vastly attracted me.

People say how they are responsible for so many bands and how they're the greatest band ever. They're not, by far.

-AC

These bands immediately came to my mind Kiss, Radiohead, Sublime, Nirvana and Tool. YES TOOL. Mind you, this is my opinion. Don't piss your pants

Oh yeah if you want a reason why Radiohead made the list."Ok Computer" was crowned best "Best Album of all time" it made me sick. NOW THAT'S OVERRATED. That album was decent but COMMON! how many people here would say that?

In regards to Pink Floyd I do think they are a bit overrated by some people, but I recently started getting into their stuff again, and some of their more obscure work. Man I gotta say I love the band. I think they are great, but not the greatest or most important or anything. I think they contributed their fair share to music though.

Also Saying something is "overrated" does not have to be a bad thing. It doesn't mean a certain band sucks etc. It just means people get carried away with praise.

Personally I think the Arcade Fire , while good, are a bit overrated. Best canadian Act? No That would be Rush.(Who are underrated by Critics and the like.)

Tool, The Beatles, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, and even though I like Radiohead - I'd add them on here. Because like Pezmerga said: "Saying something is 'overrated' does not have to be a bad thing. ... It just means people get carried away with praise." And I completely agree. But the former 4 bands I named: Ew.

Well, Best Album Ever is usually bullshit. I wouldn't say they are vastly overrated though.

I think it's more stupid to say OK Computer was just "decent" than to say it's the best album of all time.

I wouldn't say it is, but to say it's "decent" is just you going in the opposite direction to balance things out. Unless, of course, you genuinely do think the album is just decent.

Why do you think Tool are overrated? Just curious, because usually it's based around "I don't like their music.".

Tool and Radiohead deserve every bit of praise they get. To call them overrated bands because some mugs go overboard is a bit silly.

Tool are still pretty much unknown in mainstream England.

Overrated is U2 etc. Bands that top polls and bands that people feel they have to praise despite not being exceptional bands in any sense of the word, because of who they are. Of course this is still opinion.

-AC

A bit overrated : Sigur Rós, John Lee Hooker, Bob Dylan, U2, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Rage against the Machine, Chet Baker, Counting Crows, Nick Drake, Tim Buckley.

Overrated : (The) Ramones, The Teardrop Explodes, Gorillaz, Prodigy, The Band, Kraftwerk, Sex Pistols, The White Stripes, the early Rolling Stones.

Waaay overrated : Elvis Presley.

Just to name a few...

People are naming over-appreciated bands, not overrated ones.

Some people over-appreciate any band, really. Not all over-appreciated bands are overrated.

Well you can imply that I am stupid all you want. I say that it is decent because that is exactly what I think it is. I'm not trying to go the opposite, that would be saying it was shitty. Nah, I don't say things for the sake of being in accord or totally against anything. I listen to that album and I see NOTHING that is new or innovative or obtusely beautiful. I see mediocre songs on a mediocre album. That’s my opinion I could give two shits what critics or that masses say, It’s nothing special.
You can think that they deserve all the excessive praise they get. And I’m not talking about 'some mug who goes overboard." That album was chosen by the masses as the 'greatest'. Not by some individual music critic snob. Tool, I think they are an alright band. I know in KMC tool is god, but I’ve seen Tool live twice and love many of their songs. Live, i've seen MANY bands that blew Tool out of the water. Many of their songs seem to regurgitations of other songs. I think Tool unfortunately has fans who do not like Tool for their music but for the idea of being a Tool fan. Musically Tool isn’t anything great or innovative either.
I mean I'm not the only one who thinks that these bands are overrated. I'm just the only one who has any reason to say so, besides 'I don't like them.' And they are 'over rated' not 'over appreciated'. I, for one, can tell the difference.

I can't tell the difference, someone explain me,.

Ask AC, he is the one who differentiated the two in the first place.

Well, but you, for one, can tell the difference...so you can explain it to me.

Yeah I can, but I think I'll exercise my free will and say 'No'. Don't worry your head about it.

Whoa, you're so cool for saying that with such apathy!

I didn't imply anything, though now I will openly say I think you have some stupid views on music. Especially to say it's a mediocre album with mediocre songs. That said, it's all opinion regarding the music itself, so you could say the same about me. However, I don't like it because the masses do, or critics for that matter, I don't even think it's THEIR best album, let alone the best ever, but that's no reason to dislike it. You keep bringing up critics and masses, and I can't help but feel they play a part in your rating of it, which WOULD be stupid.

There isn't just one "The masses.". Many people, many critics and everywhere in between, all vote and praise different albums. Radiohead get nominated for these things nowhere NEAR as much as The Beatles and Dylan, who get voted for by rep more than anything. Radiohead have only just started getting that kind of attention. I watched a show where OK Comp "won" best album ever, and it happened to be all fellow musicians commenting on it. Like it or not, musically, it's praised for a reason. As for it not being innovative, find me an album or band that have made an album like it during that time, after, or before.

Innovation doesn't just mean being the first.

Tool are not gods, there's just a few people here who own one CD ever, and it's by their favourite band, so they can't say much else.

Musically, whether you think they're good or not is up to you, in terms of what you hear, but they are amazing musicians. Again, not the most original, but innovation doesn't mean original all the time. Find me a band doing what they do, right now.

You obviously cannot.

As I said, if you walked out to almost anyone here, random bystanders, and asked if they knew the band Tool, you'd most likely be met with a blank face. How are they overrated if, in a lot of countries, they're still generally under the radar?
