I don't know, I doubt Dumbledore would fake his death. I mean firstly it would be a bit heartless, he put off telling Harry about the prophecy for so long because of the effect it would have on Harry, then the year before Harry had lost Sirius... It just seems a bit cold to make Harry think he had died, making him think he had lost another person he cared about, which goes against the kindly way Dumbledore had been treating him.
And Dumbledore doesn't seem like the person who would fake his death. I think he was prepared to die if need be, if it was unavoidable, and throughout he seems to have made it clear there are things worse then death, although he might have wanted to live he knew that might not be possible. As well there has not really been any hint in the books about people coming back from the dead. Voldermort wasn't quite dead, ghosts are a different matter, so it would be a bit out there if suddenly Dumbledore came back.
Although what if Dumbledore's death helped Harry somehow? Like when his mother sacrificed herself which gave Harry that protection. Maybe something similar might have occured with Harry when Dumbledore died?

Well, consider in OotP while Voldemort is throwing the Avada Kedavra around the Ministry at Dumbledore, what's Dumbledore doing? Walking sedately down the corridor talking to Voldemort. True he disapperates to avoid getting hit, and Fawkes takes one for the team, but Dumbledore didn't seek refuge from the curse.

There's also a line, during Draco's confrontation with Dumbledore. Dumbledore tells Draco "After a fashion, I came back" or words to that effect(I lent my copy of HBP to a friend so I can't check the exact quote)
Also, Harry(and so we)never actually SEES Dumbledore get up from the ground on "horcrux Island" Harry's fetching water and is attacked by the inferi and suddenly Dumbledore is on his feet driving back the inferi with fire they then get in the boat and leave.Here's 2 theories each seperate, but based upon the text of all the novels to date it is supported.
1) Dumbledore survived the Avada Kedava at some point in the past and may(I said MAY) be to all intents and purposes immune to the deadly effects of the curse. This is unlikely tho because even if he is immune to the effects of the curse he's likely NOT immune to the effects of gravity.
2) Only PART of Dumbledore came back from the Horcrux Cave. As I said above, Harry never saw Dumbledore regain his feet, one second he's getting water the next he's surrounded by fire and Dumbledore is walking toward him.
In this case, I believe the potion in the basin that Dumbledore drank somehow split his body and part of Dumbledore is still lying in the cave. This is weakly supported by the line quoted above "after a fashion I came back" I believe that Dumbledore knew he wasn't whole and as we've seen Dumbledore is usually very precise when speaking.Also, why was Dumbledore's portrait the only one sleeping?
The above are two of my pet theories on how Dumbledore might have survived. I don't necessarily believe that Dumbledore IS alive, just presenting two possible ways he might "come back"
Consider, with Dumbledore believed to be dead, he is much more powerful, able to work behind the scenes in secret. Voldemort thinks he's dead, so he drops his guard as Dumbledore works to find the horcruxes.
I didn't mean to imply that Dumbledore split his soul, I doubt he'd do that, what I meant is that the potion physically split Dumbledore in two. One lying in the cave the other "dead" at Hogwarts.
Another thing that's been bothering me about Dumbledore. His sudden fraility. In OotP he's charging down into the heat of battle, fearless full of anger, capturing deatheaters fighting Voldemort to a draw and yet, in HPB mere weeks later he's "slowing down" from age???
Don't buy it. It's a con job set up by Dumbledore and Snape. They've put together a ruse to lead Voldemort into a sense of invulnerability, with DD out of the way Voldie is thinking he's free. Nope.
Prediction:Harry will be helped by an unseen individual in book 7 and that individual will turn out to be Dumbledore. DD may only turn up after the final battle is over but he will turn up in the end.

Harry said/thought it himself. All of his life he relied on others to stand in his way protecting him from Voldemort. His Mother, Sirius, and Dumbledore. Dumbledore's death forced Harry to the realization that he had to grow up and fight a man's fight.
That was why IMHO Dumbledore was showing Harry his research into the horcruxes. He was preparing Harry for his(Dumbledore's) "death" showing him the path on how he could fight and defeat Voldemort.
Harry is the one.
Dumbledore, by faking his death, could as I have said, work unseen by Voldemort and the Deatheaters and The Ministry and help Harry much more than he could if he were still "alive".
Dumbledore knew he was a distraction to Harry and Voldemort and The Ministry I mean, how many times in HBP did someone wonder what Dumbledore was up to? Dumbledore was being followed, he was
forced to stun ministry wizards go out of his way to avoid detection.
But now that he's dead? No one would know what he's up to or where he's going.
He needed to die to help harry, and I believe that in the end whatever pain Dumbledore's death may have caused Harry would be worth it if it helped, in the end to save Harry's life.
Not banking on it, really, but I would not be surprised if DD shows up again in Book 7 Alive and well.

What if dumbledore is an animagus of a phoenix, and can be reborn?
At the funeral (when his body suddenly erupted into flames)
White smoke spiraled into the air and made strange shapes: Harry thought, for one heart-stopping moment, that he saw a phoenix fly joyfully into the blue, but next second the fire had vanished. (HBP pg 645/601)

the avada does not send you flying back into the air.
snape was sayin avada kedavra and didnt mean it. REMEMBER WHAT MOODY SAYS, AND BELLATRIX, YOU NEED TO MEAN THEM. but he was nonverbally saying something else, thats why dumbledore flew back.
fawkes probably caught him as he fell or he did a simple charm to make himself safe from the impact.
thats why nonverbal spells were mentioned so much in this book.
snape was angry because he didnt want to hurt dumbledore when he sent him flying back.,
hagrid heard them arguing that snape didnt want to do somthing but dumby said he had to.
about the unbreakable vow, who said there wasnt a time limit.
he did everything he could to "help" draco but he wouldnt let snape help him.
he obviously lied to narcissa and bellatrix after he looked into her mind since it was all she could think about and pretended voldy told him about the plan. so the plan he and dumbledore made would work, so snape would be trusted by voldy when he """"kills"""" dumbledore, remaining a spy for dumby ..

Although I consider this unlikely, fans are pointing to this clue to theorize that Dumbledore hasn't been Dumbledore for all of, or at least a great portion of, the book, and that the Dumbledore we see is someone using Polyjuice potion to pretend to be him, and therefore the real Dumbledore isn't dead. Only a fake Dumbledore would have to have the memory in a bottle, because only the real Dumbledore could take it directly out of his head.
The only problem with this theory from Dumbledoreisnotdead.com is that the other person would have had to die for Dumbledore......
