The best voice ever.

I really like Roger Daltry's singing, but its obviously not the best voice.

Why is that obvious? I find it hard to definitively say which voice is 'the best'.

I'd say Chris Cornell has the best voice.

Agreed. Or at the very least, one of my favorites.

I love his voice in his range, but his range is not the greatest which limits him I think, but he is my favourite singer in rock. However, I guess I agree with you that the best singer is pretty subjective.

Well, I wasn't disagreeing with you, I just wondered why you thought it was obvious.

Or to state it differently, what makes 'the best', in your eyes?

Music:
Geoff Tate - Queensryche
Steve Perry - Journey
Toey Tempest - Europe
Bruce Dickinson - Iron Maiden

Some notable movie voices - albeit off the subject...
James Earl Jones
Ossie Davis
Sean Connery

Sting has a good voice, and good range.

This is a toughy. While trying not to be biased, I can name several, amongst many that qualify for various reasons-vocal ranges, clarity, uniqueness, all of the above, etc, etc...

Elvis
Patsy Cline
Karen Carpenter
Lionel Richie
Mariah Carey
Bon Jovi
Tom Jones
Barbara Streisand
Amy Lee from Evanescence

To me, it's:

Marvin Gaye
Jeff Buckley
Tim Buckley
Al Green

I like BobbyD's reasons: range, clarity, and uniquness. However, range is a funny thing to define because so many people have large ranges, but they change their timbre in different ranges. This is most noticeable in black metal and the like where when they drop to lower ranges they begin to growl and whatnot. These people may sing in a large range, however, they are only good in a much smaller range. I think being good in a large range is the most important. Paul Brandt is little known in the United States, but he is a Canadian country legend and his range is incredible. His bass singing is clear and very deep and yet his natural more comfortable range is actually quite high. Then there is Josh Turner who is a natural bass singer and sings incredibly well deep, but in a recent song of his decided to use his whole range and can go quite high. However, in women I find range less important and its all really about timbre. Some of my choices are pretty biases though.

So the best voices to me are:
Male
Elvis Presley
Garth Brooks
Paul Brandt
Josh Turner
Roy Orbison
Roger Daltry
Meatloaf
Ed Kowalczyk
David Coverdale
Freddie Mercury

Female
Aretha Franklin
Tori Amos
Sass Jordan
Deanna Carter
Melissa Ethridge
