Originally posted by dirkdirdenYou made a valid point in the first paragraph about choice of gaming and what you expect the PS3 to have, I too agree with you there, because that choice is made by every one of us, unless you are just a console fanboy or the sort, most likely, the price and number of good games a console has will determine your purchase, taking to mind that what may be a good game to you minght suck to someone else, I think a lot of people forget that each and every one of us humans is different, what may appeal to someone may not appeal to someone else, and because the thing that appeals to someone doesn't appeal to the other, they feel it is thier right to slag off the other game or the person. I'm not one for FPS, doesn't mean I won't try them out, or learn to accept what other people enjoy playing.
I'm an RPG fan graphics don't mean anything to me, I like the SNES rpg's better than most new PS2 rpg's, but if I'm at the store about to buy a new system. One system is 400 bucks and the other is 600 bucks, I would expect the 600 dolor system to out perform the 400 dolor system and as of now it doesn't. I would also expect the 600 dolor system to have better games than the 400 dolor system and it doesn’t.Graphic are a huge part of new systems. If the Wii had better graphics than xbox360 and PS3 you are telling me that it would change the sales because graphics don't mean anything. I think Graphic mean a great deal in many people and developers minds. If they Wii's graphics were better than the PS3 and Xbox360 it would completely dominate over both systems even more than the PS2 did.
and lastly every factor in the world plays into how well a console does; Graphics, game play, games, online, the press, console look, reliability, console name, console company, console origin, controller, how many controller ports, wifi, memory, advertising, and even something as little as fanboyizim. Every thing effects how well a console does some more then other but every little thing will directly affect the sales of the console.
The graphics part I don't agree with, there are lots of people who buy something depending on graphics, but that depends on who it is you are trying to attract, for a gamer (not a flashy graphic gamer) playing a fun game is the only thing that matters, no matter how old it is, there are lots of games I have on my shelf from way back that I never traded in, I had fun playing them, and sometimes its nice to just stick in FF7 or some other old game and see how long it takes me to complete it, sometimes what you may not have noticed or gotten the first time you played, you may get this time. I play lots of old games, I don't care about flashy graphics, and to be honest, I have never ever bought a game because it had nice graphics, personally I believe a true gamer is a gamer that can master or at least play any game possible without concern of graphics. Graphics don't make a game fun, if the game sucks, it sucks and no amount on neat and cool graphics will save it.
If graphics were such a big deal, why have XBLA? Why have backwards compatibility? Why have downloadable old games? Its because now that we have moved forwards it is still nice to play old games, and even more so due to the fact that a game that would have cost $45 back then will cost you less then $5 now, meaning you can finally play all those games you longed to play back then but couldn't buy.

We didnt say GTA3 was the only reason, we just said it was the main reason for people to pick up an PS2 rather than an XBOX because it had gta3 and the Xbox had only halo. That was huge selling point for the pS2.
You mention all those games, but 1/2 were on the xbox too, or if they werent, they was something to replace them with. But now, 3/4 of those games will be ported.
Actually, PS2 was selling fine before GTA came out 😖 And it still would have sold fine even if GTA hadn't come out. I can bet $1000 on that. Maybe you bought a PS2 for GTA, but I know lots of people who had PS2 long before GTA3 was even announced. Heck, I don't even think some people knew what GTA was before 3 came out. If anything, I think Eye toy, PS2 online, and the platformers were more of the reason why people rushed out to grab a PS2, obviously over in Japan that was a different story, there are so many RPG titles on PS2 its uncountable. 25% of these titles Japan exclusive. Over here in Europe, people got hold of a PS2 because it had pro evo and Fifa, we are football fanatics over here in Europe, even Americans know that 🙂
GTA was a good purchase, but didn't particually appeal to females, they loved Kingdom Hearts and Jak and daxter, so there was something for everyone, plus there was GT4 announced, lots of hype for that, despite the fact it blows -_-, way too easy...
Heres a list of the most highlighted and talked about games on PS2 that I can remember:
- MGS3
- MGS2
- GTA3
- GTAVC
- GTASA
- GT4
- GOW
- PRO EVO 4
- PRO EVO 5
- FIFA 2004
- FIFA 2005
- RACHET AND CLANK 2
- JAK AND DAXTER 3
- SHADOW OF THE COLLOSUS
- FF10
- FF12
- KINGDOM HEARTS (One of the most talked about games, still is)
- KINGDOM HEARTS 2
- VF4
- EYE TOY
- SMACKDOWN VS RAW
A list of games I can remember that should have been better but still have a chance:
- KILLZONE
- WIPEOUT FUSION
- XG3
- UNREAL CHAMPIONSHIP
These are the ones I can remember for now, there was lots to talk about regarding PS2, and once you got adjusted with one game, another one better was coming out, it was endless. PS2 really was gaming heaven, there was everything for everyone, non gamers, hardcore gamers, small gamers, adult gamers, there was barely anyone I knew without a PS2.
The PS3 on the other hand has a lot of work to do, its price point already is a disadvantage, and the ghost of PS2 will remain haunting the PS3 forever.
Heres a valid point, all but the bluray, PS2 owners wanted from the PS3, better online, hardrives, halo killer or at least copy, motion controllers (at the last minute), graphics, did PS2 owners not ask for all these things? I remember wanting a proper hardrive, and now its there, in fact, its bigger then what I expected. More or less most of what I wanted as a PS2 owner is there expect the bluray and price.
I like coming on here 🙂 one of the only places I can have a serious debate without some plonk making up stupid random and biased statements. 🙂
