BTW, guys, the 80GB PS3s are discontinued. We got an email about that at work yesterday.

Why? Is the 60GB still available?

Eh, I'd rather there was just one format.. I just don't like saying "Blu-Ray".

With the 360, you need to buy a HD add on first to play the dvds, right?

No.

Thats cool then, wasnt going to fork over more money just to play hd dvds when they're going to die out anyway.

Rumour was that they were going for something like a 120gb model instead.

Because there haven't been enough PS3 variants, you see.

Then in a year PS3 Lite will come out...

Don't understand why the 60gb models aren't backwards compatible, wasn't that a selling point?

I don't understand what Sony is up to, why can't they keep it simple like the 360 it has a Core, a Premium and an elite model, why can't they just do something like that; also Outbound is correct what is the point of buying a console when you can't play the old games for it?

To be fair the PS3 is starting to pay off for Sony now but... yeah, the plethora of models is disconcerting. In Europe only the crappy 40 gig version with no backwards compatability at all and only two USB ports is available... but at least it's only expensive instead of STUPIDLY expensive, and there's just the one of them so everyone knows where they are at.

And by this time, no one cares about the PS3, instead people are buying the 360 and Wii; as a bonus they have good games.

I stopped by a electronics store to look for birthday present ideas, and just asked for fun how much a Blue-ray player costs these days. as they have just won the format war and all.

And then they replied that you can either buy a Blue-ray player for 5000 NOK, or a PS3 for 4000 NOK. So the PS3 is now mostly bought as a cheaper BR player.

Nope. Only 40GB at the moment.

I heard that rumor as well. And basically thought "oh joy, another thing to confuse people with because Sony's never going to officially announce a single thing about it's features beyond the size of the harddrive..."

Way to go, Sony, you're doing a bangup job of confusing the **** out of your customers.

Why can't they do like the Xbox and only release a few and call them something like Pro, basic....anything.

the 60gb IS backwards compatible... the 40gb isn't

PS3 is picking up on sales, came second in January (PS2 third)... and 360, last... though there isn't much of a difference between those numbers 😬

But now that the HD war is over, PS3 sales will definitely rise since is the cheapest BR player around, not to mention the best (older BR players will become obsolete real quick since they can not be upgraded), it has firmwares upgrades and additional hd space, just like an HD-DVD

SONY's strategy is paying off....

Blu-ray winning the format war isn't going to give the PS3 any help.

Let's be honest here...aside from PS3 owners...who is buying blu-ray movies? As far as I know regular DVDs continue to sell in their massive numgers as if nothing have happen.

The 60GB systems released outside of the US and Japan are not fully backwards compatible.

And the only reason PS3 sales really picked up is because they're all stores had in stock. 360s, Wiis, DSs, and PSPs are very hard to get right now. PS3s are not, because they're mostly just collecting dust in stores' stockrooms.

And as has been brought up so many times...the average person does not care about blu-ray. It's not going to fully catch on for a few more years at least, I'm betting.

Well to be honest same thing happened when DVDs first came out. It's going to take a while before Blue-Ray and/or HD-DVDs replace DVDs.

Why do people talk about the movies for the PS3, it's surposed to be a Game console, DVD's are the extra's, nice extras but still...

but what will happen in the years to come?

is true not everybody cares about HD (Wii does fine without it), but HDTV's are becoming cheaper by the minute, BR will now be the standard, just like the DVD are nowadays (unless another format tries to emerge).

is not about Gamers at this point... Wii clearly attest to that. who's to say people won't buy a PS3 just to have the technology (there are ppl like that)... a logical purchase since is the cheapest and best BR player out there.
The new standard has been set, I think the device that's (let's be honest) responsible for it's so called success will capitalize on it

it might not make PS3 beat the Wii on sales, but it will definitely improve said sales. It might not happen right away, but the PS3 is only a year old... and a couple of years, things will not be the way they're now (I mean the standard for home entertainment)

... unless, of course, SONY shoot themselves on the foot yet again, and release a better (cheaper) BlueRay player....

and if it weren't all that important, MS wouldn't be considering a BR add-on, would they?

about sales: it doesn't make much difference the numbers the consoles sales make these months (they are not that far apart to tell which one sells best), but I don't see people being coerced into buying one or the other, if they want one that's out of stock, they should wait instead of taking the one covered in dust just so they won't leave empty handed....

because the reason BR beat HD-DVD is the PS3... 😕

though the PS3 was hurt by it
