Last-Gen Console Discussions (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii)

Started by ArtificialGlory507 pages

This is what the developer of "Rage", John Carmack(id Software) had to say about the consoles:

"Rage -- which is powered by the new Tech 5 engine -- matches[X360] the 60fps framerate of the PC version, while PS3 runs at just "20-30fps".

"The PS3 lags a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it," John Carmack said. "The rasteriser is just a little bit slower - no two ways about that. "The RSX is slower than what we have in the 360. The CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that's what a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3," he said."

The Cell processor at work, that is.

Seems like the only purpose of that thing is to make life harder for the developers.

I try not to get into debates about which system is better or blah blah blah because I have all three and a great PC to boot. (I know, Im lucky)

I love my 360, rarely play my Wii (even though I do want too) and I love my PS3.

But I will say that I feel the PS3 is a better built machine. It's quiet, doesn't produce alot of heat. Never had a problem with it. I do tend to play it alot more now just because of free online. I play alot of sports games and online rosters are free on the PS3 while on the 360, you need a gold account to just access them. It's annoying.

I kinda of wish the PS3 and 360 would both combine to create the ultimate console because both have there greats and downfalls.

i know on the PS3 you can but i cant find the option on the 360 to do it.

You can't do that on the 360, neither can you move video content out of the console. Restrictions everywhere. You can, however, burn the video on a CD or DVD and play it from there, just as you would using a flashdrive. Any media works like that (as long as the console recognizes the format) video, photos or mp3's

Wait, what? How?

of course you can.

in the root directory of your USB flashdrive, create a folder and name it VIDEO (all in caps) and just place the video in there. Once plugged just go to video section of the XMB, select USB flash memory (or any other media memory card you're using) and the video will be there (the same with pics, PICTURE folder, or music, MUSIC folder).

If the PS3 recognizes the format (MP4, AVI, Divx, Xvid, mpg) you can choose to copy it to the PS3 hard drive, just press "Triangle" when on the video icon, and then choose "copy".

If you happen to have placed the video on the root directory or any other folder (other than VIDEO), when you choose USB... the video won't show up, all you have to do is press "triangle" and then choose "search all" or something like that (can't remember) and then it will show you all the files and folders you have in the root directory, from there just choose the folder in which the video is in, and play it, or copy it.

I have burned HD movies on a DVD and both the PS3 and the 360 have been able to play it. However when you burn more than one kind of media on the CD/DVD (say for instance video and music) the PS3 won't recognize it, while the 360 does and do so very well. I guess in order for the PS3 to play the content from the disc, you have to create and place the media on their corresponding folder (VIDEO, MUSIC, etc) and then burn it. haven't tried that though.

On more thing, both the PS3 and 360 WON'T recognize subtitles files. The PS3 does recognize subtitles, but only if the video is encoded in Divx/Xvid and the subtitle file has been place inside the video container (everything is in one divx file).

Neither console will play .MKV files 😬

Sweet, thanks.

Kinda sucks that neither of them can play MKV, anyone know of any working conversion programs?

Chomperx9, I'm fairly sure there are ways to get past some of those restrictions on 360, but they require you to buy separate devices. Not quite sure what they're called though.

this is the easiest, fastest, and ,most the time, perfect method to change a video file from .mkv to .mp4

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_mkv_to_mp4_for_ps3.cfm

There are other methods, but this one is the easiest:
you just use one program to do it all (GotSent), and since you are not actually encoding anything (just changing the Audio) you get the exact same quality the mkv file had (absolutely no video quality loss).

btw: You don't need to choose the option "split under 4 Gb", leave that one unchecked.

If you want subtitles, then you will have to burn them on the video file, doing so means reencoding the video, and you usually lose some quality.

Note: all of the above works for X360 as well

Just for PS3:
If you don't want to burn them permanently on the video (use "soft subs" that you can turn on and off) you have to reencode the video to an .avi file (usuaally divx file), and then use this program to add the subtitle:
http://www.calcitapp.com/AVIAddXSubs.php
but you still end up losing some quality

the best video file converter is the youtube downloader

http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/

dont have to pay dont have to sign up no email nothing. takes up no space. and of course you can save youtube videos. you can convert any type of videl file with that program.

hardly takes up any space as well.

Or you can just download the Firefox add-on "DownloadHelper"

the 3 Red Rings "of death" - Xbox 360 (Elite)

So it happened to me once again.

This is my second xbox 360 console that got hit with the red rings of death. It's actually my 3rd xbox 360 consoled in all.

What hurts was that it was the Elite with the z mobo that was suppose to eliminate the any and all possibilities of the red rings flash, as oppose to the old Falcon motherboard.

Come to find out, i can't send it to MS cause the Elite's expired and i'll be charged a nice fee for their fcuk up. So...

I've decided to tackle the problem myself. I've opened up my console and stripped it bare. I got to the bottom of the problem with the help of the internet and it seems as if the issue lies with some lame ass spongy heat conductors (4 of 'em) that were expected to conduct heat really well, according to whatever genius put these things in there. I choose to replace the mini tampons with copper since copper is a better heat conductor.

I start my project today. I just purchased a (working set) of t9 screw drivers, a roll of electrical tape to wrap the cooper around with and a tube of silicon based heat sink pastel. I also got a dust blower for the mobo and heat sinks. I will resurrect my xbox elite on my own and if it doesn't work i'm done with xbox 360. I love the machine/it's games but it's just too faulty. I'll practically be done with video games actually. Cause i'm not gonna get ps3 or wii cause i'm not into 'em.

I'll just wait till 2012 for the new next gen systems.

But anyone have any advice or suggestion before i begin to operarte?

Thanks in advance.

Good luck to you man, I honestly can't tell you whats the problem, I've had my Xbox for around 3 years now, and i've never had any problems with it.

that was suppose to eliminate the any and all possibilities of the red rings flash

It is not possible to eliminate any possibility of a problem. All that can be done is to lessen the chances, which is what they've done. You just got unlucky.

Yep, manufacturing any sort of complex part will have it's defects. The worst thing about computers and consoles is that the problems could happen 6 months to 3 years or so.

Also, red rings of death means general hardware failure which could be anything. There will always be red rings of death for the 360 but as Peach said, they can lessen the chances. The faulty heat conductors on the graphics chip (I believe) was the main pulprit for many years.

Though, I still think the PS3idbuilt much better than the 360. It just feels more solid.

The red rings on the 360 are really pissing me off. My room isn't hot, it's barely dusty, and the surface I place the 360 on isn't either hot or dusty it's just cold and yet it keeps making that accursed red ring. I even have an intercooler on it for god sakes. Everytime I see the ring I freak out because I keep thinking it's the Red Ring of Death but it's not thank goodness. It'd be nice if the system would give me a warning that it's about to do that because it's hard trying to get a disc out of a console that won't turn back on.

the e74 can be fix by using pennies 😆

I can't really say the 3 red lights are due to the exact same problem every time, but it seems the heat conductors and the cheap ass solder use are the main reasons. The other reason is that there's just not enough room for the heat to dissipate (not enough airflow) so it overheats and breaks (desolders). That one can be prevented (hopefully) by using fans, or modding the console airflow (not recommended) by adding, replacing fans.

Wonder what will happen when the PS3 Slim is released (if it proves to be more than just a fantasy)

good luck dude. Just be sure to follow the instructions correctly.
It was so funny reading the fixing guides and read people complain (after they opened the console) about the cheap ass materials use by M$ to cheapen productions costs.

we'll be dead by 2012 ... unless you're John Cusack

Um, get rid of the intercooler. They do not help at all, and can harm the system.

I had no trouble turning on my system to get the game out when I got the three red lights, btw...

If it's the general hardware 3 corners red ring then it's best to diagnose it yourself before opening your xbox as you may end up "fixing" the wrong problem.

Follow the guide on that link to find your problem before proceeding.

But won't the 360 shut itself off early because of the overheating? Without the intercooler, my 360 feels like a toaster sometimes and when the system feels hot, it turns off.

the intercoolers help, as long as they are not connected directly to the power supply with some plastic plug. they do manage to keep the temperature down

that list should be updated. Is registering the e74 as an AV cable problem, and it isn't

I found this one to be a better (updated) list

I've never seen an intercooler that's not that type, personally.
