Xbox 360 USB Hard Drive Support Confirmed
System update coming this April.
March 26, 2010 - Microsoft has confirmed the Xbox 360 will be receiving USB hard drive support in a system update available on April 6. As detailed in a leaked report from last week, the update allows users to store "profiles, game saves, demos and more," according to the announcement.Once the update is installed, you'll be allowed to insert any USB hard drive into the console, however, the drive must first be configured. The system will then conduct a one time "performance and integrity check" to confirm the drive is working properly.
Users can then set how much space they want to use on the drive, but only up to 16GB each. The remaining space can be accessible by your PC or Mac computer. USB flash drives are also compatible with this update, which Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb suggests you use instead of a standard hard disk drive.
"I highly recommend using flash based instead of spinning media like a hard drive…it's just going to give you a MUCH better experience," he said.
Users can connect up to two drives at one time, allowing for a total of 32GB, and drive configuration must be done manually through the menu. It will not be automatic. The two options are: "Configure Now (Format and Configure the Full Device), or Customize (you can choose how much memory you want configured for Xbox 360 from the free space on the device.)"
Microsoft is also partnering with SanDisk to release a Xbox 360 branded flash drive in May that comes pre-configured. Check the gallery to see an assortment of new menu screenshots.
Nice! 😄
Can You Afford Microsoft's Xbox 360 USB Drives?
No you probably can't.
March 29, 2010 - Retailer GameStop has posted the price and release date for the Xbox 360-branded USB drives. It seems Microsoft hasn't exactly learned how to competitively price its accessories. There will be two different sizes, an 8GB and 16GB version. According to the product listing, the 8GB size will retail for $39.99, while the 16GB will retail for $69.99. The USB drives will ship on April 6, according to the listings.
A quick search on Newegg reveals you can grab a SanDisk 16GB stick for about $40. So why the higher cost? The GameStop listing says that Xbox 360 sticks offer "hassle-free 'plug and play' installation," meaning the user won't have to configure his or her own 3rd party drive upon inserting it into the console. But according to Microsoft, having to configure your own drive doesn't sound too difficult.
These retail listings have not been confirmed, so there's a chance these prices may change. We asked Microsoft for comment and will update when we hear back.
Not so nice 😐

Meh. As always Microsoft inflates prices.

Yeah but doesn't that just mean I can partition off 16 GB off my 300Gb harddrive for the 360? And use the remaining 280GB like normal?

so, yep. You can still use the remaining space with your PC
Silly 360... Took it's ****ing time to get something that basic. What's the point in adding an extra 16GB? That's what? Around 23 films? Good for maybe a back up but little else. Not even a back up for someone with a filled console. I guess I'll probably put another partition in my HDD for it but I have to say that this is not an impressive update.
My 360 isn't much more than a dust magnet now anyway. Exclusives have all but dried up. (And it's not an exclusive if I can get it on my PC).... Roll on Gears 3 I guess. The next title I will be buying for it probably.

Truth be told, the 360 version does look sharper and generally more vivid. That should teach me not to watch low-res videos. Though it has been my experience that most cross-platform games look almost identical on both PS3 and 360.
