Report: Firmware 3.60 Re-secures PS3
Hackers hacked off at new firmware.

The PS3's latest firmware does more than bring cloud saves to Sony's console, if reports are to be believed; it also re-secures the PS3 against the hacks that have blighted it in recent months.

According to hacker Youness Alaoui (as reported by Digital Foundry) firmware 3.60 introduces a new security system for the console that counters against the recent hacks.

"For now, it looks to me (at first glance) that the PS3 has been re-secured", said Alaoui on his Twitter account, "but it doesn't mean it can't be broken again from scratch."

Notorious hacker George Hotz was at the forefront of the hacks back in January, and since then Sony has pursued him and those using the crack with force, and at one point was rumoured to be developing a hack-proof console.

Firmware 3.60 brings with it more than some peace of mind for Sony – it also comes with the ability to back up their save files online, allowing them to access the saves from any console.

I'll give it a week 😬

They should roll out new hardware already, Firmware only annoy innocent consumers.

Speaking in an investor note, Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz has predicted that if current sales trends persist, Xbox 360 is poised to outsell the Nintendo Wii for the 12 months ending March 31st 2011.
Microsoft announced last night that it sold 535,000 consoles in the US last month – a record-breaking number for a non-holiday month

It is nice to see that the Kinect was able to give some more live to the XBox. I would buy a new one and a Kinect if I had the money, but right now my XBox still works, albeit with the ocassional hang up.

I haven't touched my Xbox in ages. I let a friend borrow it since his PS3 bit the dust, and he's currently playing Alan Wake which is also mine and I haven't beaten yet 😬.

Last game I played in it was FFXIII (first disc only) 😐

I'm mildly interested in Kinect, only cause of Dance Central, but one game isn't worth the expensive purchase

Looking forward for the NGP.
The graphics on that little beaut is absolutely stunning!
Puts the iPad 2 to shame lol.

Anyone know when and where it can be pre-ordered?

Couldn't find any better place to post this, but it seems one of my deepest, darkest fears has finally come real.

New 360 Discs Incompatible with Some Consoles
Microsoft replaces incompatible console for free.

It appears that the new Xbox LIVE update, which will introduce support for the new XGD3 disk format, might prevent a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs.

Kotaku were contacted by a reader who received an email from Microsoft informing him that it had detected via Xbox LIVE that his Xbox (a 60GB Pro from 2009) was affected. Microsoft has offered to replace his console with a new Xbox 360S with 250GB hard drive at no expense.

The email has since been verified by Xbox Support via their official Twitter account.

The XGD3 format will allow for additional storage space on a game disc, and will provide additional levels of copy production.

The Xbox LIVE Spring update will be rolled out between May 19 to May 30.

Update: Microsoft has confirmed that a "a very small number" of consoles are affected. This fault manifests itself as a 'disc unreadable' or 'disc unsupported' error on the screen. Microsoft said it is able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console.

If you receive this error, contact Microsoft at www.xbox.com/support/contact

Wow this is great news!

Any mention of the specific game title(s) which does/do not work on his 360?

I'd like to try if that/those game(s) do not work on my 360 console (hopefully, it won't).

I want that new console as a replacement for my clunky, old Phat 360.

..... lol

Microsoft Xbox LIVE Diamond subscription IPTV tipped for E3 2011

Details of Microsoft’s E3 2011 launch have leaked, and as expected it’s a new IPTV service baked into Xbox LIVE. The company is putting the finishing touches to Xbox LIVE Diamond, WinRumors‘ source claims, the official name for the much-rumored Project Orapa. The Diamond TV system will combine existing mediaroom IPTV services and Xbox LIVE, harnessing Kinect-based motion control along with various music and video offerings.

Microsoft’s demonstration is expected to consist of the Kinect avatar control, as well as the IPTV streaming, assuming it can sign off on the rights before the keynote. “Microsoft is currently in last minute negotiations to secure the necessary agreements in time” the source claims, pointing to Apple’s similar talks over iCloud.

Xbox LIVE Diamond is rumored to be the first stage in a standalone hardware IPTV push by Microsoft, powered by special SoC’s based on Silverlight. Ex-Microsoft Hardware head Tom Gibbons shifted over to the TV and Services business, in a move that’s said to be at least partly connected to the “Xbox LIVE, Kinect & Mediaroom mash-up.”

Microsoft’s other announcements at E3 are believed to be around a new “Fusion” line of branded products or services, with trademarks for “Fusion Vault”, “Fusion Genesis” and “Fusion Sentient” all having been spotted. The domain xboxfusion.com has also been acquired. Finally, there’s Microsoft Ventura, a set of streaming music and video services that uses social networking and recommendations to promote new content.

SlashGear will be at E3 2011 next week, bringing you back all the details of what Microsoft – and others – announce!

Sounds Interesting

Just pre-ordered the Gears of war 3 Xbox-360 hope it was worth it i haven't owned an Xbox before but i hear it's better Than the PS3.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's better... 313

They're pretty much the same, it basically just comes down to how much a bluray player matters to you and what exclusives you like better.

Well i do like the Xbox exclusives more so that's a plus and the one im getting has more memory so i think it's worth it

Get a PS3, you'll get more out of than an Xbox. You don't have to pay to play online and the bluray doesn't sound so bad. The exclusives games on both sides don't really matter. Unless you are die hard Halo fan, then your best bet is XBOX.

Of course, the 360 online fee is rather paltry, and it includes security that hasn't been ripped to shreds. So there's that.

Xbox 360 Being Phased Out of Japanese Shops
Is Microsoft's console dead in Japan?

Edge is reporting that retailers in Japan are to stop stocking the Xbox 360, essentially ringing the death knell for the console in the region.

The retailers in question cite the console's continuing poor performance as justification - the Xbox 360 has suffered a 46.7% year-on-year drop in sales, and has sold just 72,721 in Japan since January. That's less than a tenth of what the PS3 has managed. All in all, the Xbox 360 has sold 1.5 million units in Japan since launch, as Microsoft reported in June.

Geo, one of Japan's leading game and anime retailers (and a real geek's paradise), is "drastically scaling back its Xbox 360 business", according to the Edge report. It is also claimed that other retailers are going to stop stocking it all together: at Yamada Denki, Tokyo, the report states that "the company is removing hardware and software from the majority of its stores nationwide, and is selling off its remaining stock at a heavy discount. It will still sell the console and games, but only in selected stores where the system continues to be sufficiently popular."

Anybody who has been to a Japanese games store in the past few years will have clocked that the Xbox 360's presence is barely noticeable, with games relegated to back shelves and bargain bins. The console's most high-profile exclusive in the region, The Id@lmaster 2, a game in which you train up a nubile pop starlet, has now been ported to PS3, which is certainly a contributing factor in the console's failing fortunes.

This does not have good implications for Microsoft's future in Japan, as any successor to the Xbox will have to struggle against retailers' perceptions. However, Microsoft remains committed to the region - the company recently appointed a new boss of the Japan division, Takashi Sensui. But will he be fighting a losing battle?

Idolmaster? Lol wut?

Japanese are really weird

the only region Xbox is successful is the North-American... even in Europe they clearly have to battle it out with Sony
