Can someone tell me why my PS3 is glitching so badly? Almost every game I have played in the past week (Tekken 6, RE5, Batman: AA, and now Castlevania: LOS) has glitched with bars, ribbon-like oddities, and other such anomalies on the screen during gameplay.

There's something wrong with your PS3.

Mine works just fine with those games.

Probably a video issue.

have you tried using a different AV/HDMI cable?

is the glitch only video related, or game breaking?

The only time that this happens is when I play Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. However, when I play Tekken 6, I get a few ribbons and bars.

I'm using the standard cables that came included with my 80GB PS3.

What happens is exactly this:

When playing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, I will get a lot of ribbons and bars on screen, some ghosting images, screen flashes, and, ultimately, the entire screen will go black. However, I can still see my HUD of health, Light Magic, and Shadow Magic. I can move Gabriel with my controller, because I can hear him swing his whip and grunt if he is injured. Also, the sounds (music and sound effects) are present. There are certain occasions when the screen will go black for only a minute or so, then come back, only to go black again permanently. If I restart the game from the last checkpoint, I can, sometimes, play for up to 15 minutes, only to have the same thing happen again.

I just don't know what could be wrong, other than a bad PS3 component.

Sounds to me like one of the processors in the Cell architecture is screwed up. The HUD, movement, and sounds pretty much cinch it. All those sections of the game would be handled by different parts of the Cell, so whichever processor the pipeline is assigning to real-time rendering is probably bad.

Thanks for your input, GK. I'll look further into this matter. What would you recommend I do? Can Sony repair my system, or will I, maybe, have to break down and buy another PS3?

What I don't understand is why this in only happening with Castlevania. My PS3 has never acted like this. When I first bought Tekken 6 about 3 months ago, the ribbons didn't start until about a week or so after, and it was the only game to date that had ever done that. After that, RE5 and Batman: AA, again, with no prior issues, began to glitch with ribbons. Now, Castlevania has ribbons, flashes, and blackouts. These games are the only ones in my library that will do this. I tried playing some of the other numerous games in my library like GoW III, CoD: MW2, Street Fighter 4, FF XIII, GTA 4, and inFamous all to which they performed perfectly.

The fact it's happening with some games and not others also tells me that it's probably a single bad processor. Those games just all happen to assign that specific processor to real-time rendering.

Best thing to do is contact Sony, see if it's covered by some warranty. They'll tell you your options.

I just saw on 2 sites that the PS3 is only 1/2 million behind 360 now.

Were those US numbers? They are still millions behind globally- but they are gaining right now on the back of Move.

360 has the Kinect card to come, though.

I don't think it could be US numbers, the PS3 is far behind there I think. Maybe it's European numbers...

Nah, prefer the tears of Xbox fanboys.

EDIT: Console wars can go jump off a duck

Seriously though that shouldnt allowed. Microsoft monitoring your own personal life and recording your words and stuff. That needs to be taken to court

People are blowing this way out of proportion and assuming Orwellian measures that are patently ridiculous. You have the ability to disconnect the camera at any time, you have to switch it on; it can't be done remotely, and even when it's on and you're using it for video chat, Microsoft is still subject to the same federal right-to-privacy laws as anyone else. The clause is in there so that, if someone misuses Kinect technology in an illegal manner, Microsoft can bring admissible evidence to court.

Pretty much. It's not going to be something like "we'll call the police if we know you're underage and you get drunk while playing games". It's more like if they detect that the system is modded or you're pirating things, or if people are stupid enough to use the Kinect to solicit or send porn.

i was gonna strip for MSpoints. 🙁
