All that the links you provided show is that with a $600 price tag Sony will not be able to attract enough buyers to turn a profit. Of course, that only stands if the price remains at $600.

Sony undoubtedly knows this, and also undoubtedly knows that there is a certain amount of people who will buy a $600 console either out of blind company support or a "techno-junkie" attitude that what costs the most is the only thing worth having. Big-time companies rarely have any love for their customers, so why WOULDN'T Sony use a bigger price tag on the ones that will buy no matter what, and then turn to a more reasonable price to attract everyone else?

To be honest I have no idea why SONY would even bother to add so much new technology. The real question is why would SONY start off at $600 knowing very vell that by speculation if you remember people were already saying it would cost $1000 and wouldnt consider buying it.

Sony is adding so much new stuff because, for their intended market of technology snobs, adding in some new things can allow them to up the retail price considerably. $600 is still more than everything is actually worth, but if anyone was actually expecting to pay $1000, then they are attracted to the prospect of "saving" $400.

Exactly -- they're adding all the new stuff just to say "we've got all this brand-new top of the line stuff!"

I really don't think that with the price tag, it will do well, and Sony's going to be shooting themselves in the foot.

As for the Xbox thing...prices for the 360 will probably drop a bit by October, as it'll have been out nearly a year by then.

And what I meant by it'd be cheaper to make more units and sell them at a lower price....say it costs $5000 to create the technology for something, and then $25 to duplicate it for each unit. If they make 10 units, each will cost $525. If they make a hundred, each will cost $75. See what I mean? The more you produce, the lower a price you can sell at.

Either way I will not get a PS3 at first because of the price. I really want a Nintendo and a 360. Especially Nintendo because of their innovative idea. Also for $600 CDN plus tax I can afford to buy both consoles.

Peter Moore agrees with you, too.

I see myself as getting a Wii pretty soon after it comes out - possibly at launch, thanks to Zelda. I might just get a 360 after the price drop, though I skipped on the original Xbox.

I'll probably get a PS3 eventually, but there's no way I'm shelling out their asking price. I waited until just last year's holiday season to get a PS2, I imagine myself doing similar with the PS3.

like i said...its more of a computer not a console. so there isnt really a compitition lol.

hmm...all this market chatter is buzzing in my juvinile head...but someone back there was right...the real competition is between sony and nintendo, who have been in the console wars longer than the xbox has...but im going to buy the wii because of one or two things things...a cheaper console, with a very high amount of gameplay potential......and because of SSBB 😂

I wouldnt mind getting one of these thats for sure

Sony wont make money from the PS3, no matter how low they sell it. They make money from licenses.

I'd definitely wait to buy a 360. It's good, but not good enough to warrant paying up $400 for it.

I allready have one. 😛
