Here is what Jesus said to Peter: "You are PETROS, and UPON this PETRA [i.e., ' that I am the Son of the living God'] I will build my church." The truth that Peter had just confessed was the FOUNDATION upon which Christ would build His Church. He meant that Peter had seen the BASIC, ESSENTIAL truth concerning His PERSON [i.e., DEITY in the FLESH]...the ESSENTIAL truth upon which the church would be founded...and that NOTHING would be able to overthrow the truth...NOT even all those forces of evil that might be arrayed against it. The Bible tells us plainly...NOT that the church is built upon Peter...but that it IS "built UPON the FOUNDATION of the APOSTLES and PROPHETS, Christ Jesus Himself being the CHIEF CORNER STONE" [Ephesians 2:20]. And AGAIN, "For other FOUNDATION can NO MAN lay than that which is LAID, which is Jesus Christ" [1 Corinthians 3:11].
Too, Peter is NOT the "rock"...for the ROCK is CHRIST ALONE: "And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them; and that ROCK was Christ" [1 Corinthians 10:4]. Only God is the ROCK [1 Samual 2:2;22:2;2 Samual 23:3;Psalm 18:2;61:2;89:25;92:5]...and since Jesus Christ IS God Almighty He ALONE is the ROCK of our Salvation...NOT Peter who was a SINNER in need of salvation that ONLY the ROCK of Salvation [Christ] could bring.
In {Isaiah 8:14] we are told that "he shall be a sanctuary; but for a STONE OF STUMBLING and for a ROCK OF OFFENCE to BOTH Houses of Israel." In [1 Peter 2:8] Peter tells us that Jesus was "...a STONE OF STUMBLING, and a ROCK OF OFFENCE......" Peter and Isaiah RECOGNIZED who Jesus was...the ROCK of Salvation for all of us who TRUST IN HIM.
