Well, despite the altruism that seems inherent to the Rebel forces, I see no reason to be concerned.
If they deleted their comm logs, we don't have to worry about them.
If they didn't, and escape, no worries.
If they didn't, and are destroyed, no worries.
If they didn't, and surrender out of fear, they are sure to delete their logs anyway, to remove all possibly incriminating evidence.
Also, personal weapons are not really contraband anyhow.
Which reminds me, one of the three of us in the Last Laugh needs to erase our comm logs with the freighters as well. Unless Kyle and Eerin have issues with others touching their ship, Rhys can do it.
Placing others before oneself, working for the greater good, as many Rebels seem to do. Simply stating that helping the freighters no longer works toward our own good, so I see no reason to possibly endanger ourselves trying. A little "Darkie thinking," maybe, but self-preservation is a functional goal.
"Placing others before oneself"
Yes, I agree.
Hence, my 'sorry?' to:
"If they didn't, and are destroyed, no worries."
You have all valued the crews on those ships purely by the practical value they gave to you.
It does not seem to have occurred to anyone to, say, try and save their lives.
The Imperials are going to kill them- but you guys don't seem to care so long as it is no skin off of your backs.
What is it you are fighting for again?
Well, I'm thinking of it more on the terms of how helping them now will definitely connect us to whatever shady business the Imps think is going on, since going up and communicating with them, going down, and then going back up again to help them can never look anything [i]but[i] odd.
We're fighting for the end of Imperial oppression. And as "fight" is the functional term here, lives are going to be lost. Are you expecting three people in a single ship to take on a Star Destroyer and its fleet of TIEs and actually succeed in much of anything? Worse, even if we were to survive, the only way we could protect the freighters would be to attack TIEs ourselves. Not only does that incriminate us immediately as is, it also puts us in a position of being unable to leave the planet as long as the blockade is present, gives the Imps reason to mobilize Troopers within the city, increases our chances of being captured, which makes the Rebellion vulnerable should they interrogate us.
There's more to it than simply letting them die because we can't use them. Attempting to save them is just all kinds of bad.
That is the creed of a mercenary, not a hero.
You are freedom fighters. What you are fighting for is a Galaxy where people are not that selfish any more.
Trying to save them seemed more like suicide, did it? Han has a lot to teach. He turned back, because he IS a hero, even though it was suicide.
You let them die and you don't care. You didn't even try to talk them out of it. As for taking on a Star Destroyer- that is thinking like an Imperial Captain. Think like a Rebel. Wasn't Kyle talking about distractions earlier?
And for failing in your basic purpose it is an xp penalty to the entire Rebel side. If you had tried and failed it would be one thing, but you have let your immediate goals get in the way of simply being good people and at that point you become no better than the Imperials.
(Add my apologies to the mix. I was thinking along the same lines as the good General there. While I was concerned for them, I figured that it would start the war we're trying to delay, connect us to a rebellion on planet, etc and so forth. Aside from that, Ush, the way you tend to nail us down alot factored in, but I had such a narrow focus for a goal. I concentrated on the logs not being found, when we went as far as we could, I figured we were done. Also, my thinking was that the freighters knew what they were getting into. I did not figure on the Imps simply blowing them up without preamble. That might have changed my thinking, but it might not. Like you said, chalk it up to experience. Just wanted to share my jumble of thoughts on the matter.
As far as making the Imperials look bad for attacking without proof, well it sounds good, but I'm betting they would have simply stopped them for an inspection, like we feared all along. Now that they are actually going to destroy them outright makes me realise that they indeed must know what the ships were carrying. We could not be certain that Rylis or Arvus didn't make it onto their ships and get the logs before they took off. Same goes for our ships as well. Now we know we can't be sure we erased our logs in time. I'm afraid that so far the occupation of Lanzar is going to look very legitimate. We're in trouble and we all need to put our heads together. Shame only my hindsight is 20/20.)
Kyle watches the events unfold behind him with a sinking feeling. "They're not going to make it. It doesn't look like they're stopping either." his expression hardens. "Well, they knew what they were getting into." But that wasn't what he truly felt. Then he sighs and looks back at his crew. "I guess we screwed them over, huh? Well, it's too late to save them, but we can still make our feelings about it known."
With that he jerks hard on his ships controls and banks it sharply to head in the other direction.
"Eerin, charge our deflectors, set them to full front! Arm the weapons. Rhys, try to call the freighters and get them to stand down. Then tell the Imperials that as citizens of the Republic, we can't stand by and allow other citizens to be executed without fair trial."
(Talk about not being able to land back at the starport.)
