To use another example:

Band names. The Hives and Isis, right? You can't realistically say The Hives is good. You CAN say that Isis ARE good, or IS good. Because the name suggests singular, but they are infact a collection of individuals. Like a class.

So what I said still applies.

-AC

You said "the Hives" you can't say "the Isis" is good either... it still doesn't agree. ❌

anyway, here is a good link for the collective noun debate you've been engaged in

http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/collectivenoun.htm

A lot of people in America I've found, apply that logic to many collectives. Anything consisting of more than one person but with one collective tag is always refered to as is.

Over here, it's are. As I've used bands (another collective under an often singular tag) as an example. People often say "Is" rather then "Are". Both are applicable. I don't use "Is" in such a context.

-AC

"the hives" is a plural in itself, but in the context of referring to the band, it is singular...mostly...depending on the context of the sentence.

but the term "the hives is playing a show tonight" its a gramatically correct i believe. of coarse it sounds awkward...but its still correct. not saying that the alternative "are" would be incorrect.

:edit: unless the band actually consisted of hives 😛

Because they're not called "The Isis" are they? When the singular TAG in itself is plural, obviously you can't use a singular. Well, you technically could I guess, but as PVS said it would sound awkward.

If they were called The Hive. You could use is or are.

I was talking about the phrasing, which in that case would be incorrect. ✅

Correct.

You may refer to a singular band in the plural if you refer to the members of that band. The meaning is then not obscured, however the grammar becomes a little bit iffy because you should really say something like 'The members of The Hives are good'.

That's a little bit too prescriptive though.

Eg: If you went to a show you could say "Isis was awesome tonight." Or "Isis were awesome tonight."

I view them as a group, not one thing.

*edit* getting sleepy...

i think thats more a matter of what we are accustomed to speaking, but not a matter of what is gramattically correct. i would say "the hives are on tour" simply because im conditioned to tag an 'are' on to a plural noun, regardless of whether it is part of a singular title. there is no gramatical rule demanding it though.

Well we agree then, as long as the article "the" isn't used in there then you aren't restricted to "is".

You're not restricted to "Is" either way. If they were called The Hive, as I said, then you could still use "Are".

-AC

😑

Anyway....

How do people rate their own spelling or grammatical proficiency?

Forget capitalisation, if you can't do that you shouldn't be allowed near a device with electricity running through it.

I am a total perfectionist who will go back and edit if I spot an error. Even when I'm talking on MSN I'll scan my messages before sending to be sure that I haven't majorly messed anything up. I'm a bit nuts about it, but hey. Better than coming off as an idiot because I can't bother with basic grammar and spelling.

Technically you aren't restricted.

Take 'The White Stripes'. If each member is a 'White Stripe', then you would be restricted to 'are'. However as 'The White Stripes' is a singular noun, 'is' is correct, if not a little clumsy sounding.

Exactly as I stated earlier, it's about restricted code.

Well done PVS

anyway, the original sentence "The class are getting it wrong" is incorrect, since the class is acting as a group as opposed to independantly. if the sentence was "the class are getting it wrong, flunking, and are not educated correctly."
that would be correct. since one student may get it wrong, but not flunk...and so on.

Sorry, edit "are"... in this example its deviant anyways...
