Are and is are both applicable, I'll think you'll find. Is can be used when referring to a group as a collective thing. Are can be used in a different sense.
When I say "the class are getting it wrong" it's used in the context of "The kids in the class are getting it wrong".
Referring to the class singularly with 'are'.
It's applicable.
