That's what he said. This can for one be taken as a general remark and not aimed at you personally, and second it is surely right. If someone does grade papers wrong they shouldn't be grading. Now I agree that it wasn't actually necessary to say it and it probably had a very negative tone, but since this is all this particular arguement is aboot I think we should all take a step back, breath a little and then debate like normal reasonable adults again (except for Whirly...he's a troll)

ok ac, you had your jab, got the response you seeked from the one you jabbed, and now we can go to topic, cant we? 🙂

wasnt a jab at all? then its just cooincidence dispite the cross-thread bickering. anything is possible.

so yeah, topic

Are and is are both applicable, I'll think you'll find. Is can be used when referring to a group as a collective thing. Are can be used in a different sense.

When I say "the class are getting it wrong" it's used in the context of "The kids in the class are getting it wrong".

Referring to the class singularly with 'are'.

It's applicable.

You have means which makes it current which would limit the verbs to "are" and "is", but the grouping is still singular which means that the verb used in the situation is infact is...

When I said "The class are getting it wrong", it was applicable. Because I could be referring to a present tense, which was my intention. In a classroom situation. The class is or the class are both refer to the same thing in different, but not incorrect ways. Similarly I could say "You can't refer to them as one thing, they're singular people." But it's still applicable. Depends what you prefer.

Are was applicable, you don't like it, fine with me. I'm not here to cater to you.

Bardock thats like saying if you make a mistake at your job you should be fired. If he had said " if you are making many mistakes while grading papers you shouldnt be grading papers "that would have been one thing. But thats not what he said now is it? Where this "person" thinks he has the right to judge whether or not I am fit to teach is beyond me. But then again that goes back to the ego thing.

then wtf are we paying you for?? 😛

Yeah, if I had said what seems pleasing to you, I'm sure you'd not have thrown a tantrum.

What I said wasn't offensive, it was true. You didn't like it, tough.

You HAVE to be referring to it in a present tense because you said, MEANS.

Church is always singular and class is always singular, now if I said, the COWS are going to get a drink that would work, because there is infact more than one cow, but since there is only ONE class, it stays as is... which is present tense because you said "means".

Subject and verb agreement. ✅

yes, "class" is a collective singular ✅

To use another example:

Band names. The Hives and Isis, right? You can't realistically say The Hives is good. You CAN say that Isis ARE good, or IS good. Because the name suggests singular, but they are infact a collection of individuals. Like a class.

So what I said still applies.

OK, so now the real question is who gets to give him the "F" for today? I think since you pointed this out you should do the honors. As for me, supper is done cooking, I'm off kids. 🙂

I am almost absolutely positive that he didn't judge wether or not you are fit as a teacher, I think he jsut wanted to say what he said, that if someone grades papers wrong (thats plural already) they shouldmmaybe not be al,lowed to grade papers (since grades in school very much determine what will happen in the kids future). Now I totally agree that it wasn't a nice thing to say and that it was insulting to you although not actually phrased so you had to be offended. But what he says is none the less true. If my english teacher would grade papers wrong and I would lose points I would be very much pissed, that's why teachers should be near to perfect.

Not unblocked me yet then? Oh no.

Still childishly having pops from the sidelines because we've quite clearly learnt you can't take what you dish out. Funny how PVS hasn't mentioned that to you yet though. Hmm.
