Originally posted by Alpha CentauriBut not with "is" not with White Stripe without the article, but all of this is deviant now... though in this example you are correct.
It's perfectly acceptable to use the sentence "The White Stripes are playing tonight".As it would be to use are in my previous example with "The Hive" (singular). "The Hive are playing tonight."

just admit you were wrong when you said
"The class are getting it wrong", so we can move on 😛
Obviously.
I wouldn't disagree, I was arguing that my wording was acceptable, which it was. Not necessarily grammatically exact.
Yes I agree, C-Master. Yet, my use of "are" wasn't anywhere close to "whorjweorj34832423". If you hadn't made the decision to point it out (not complaining at all, was your right to) I doubt anyone would have noticed enough to make all the hoopla.

Haha, no I wasn't moaning about it. You were well within your right to do so.
Just saying that being accustomed to speaking as I did and speaking like a retard are obviously two different things. I'm fully aware I use the grammatically wrong use of "are" sometimes, I admit that openly. It's acceptable though, which we've also agreed on so no point going back into it. It's just not as easy to notice as someone with the typing prowess of Jackie Malfoy.
If you know who she was.

Just to wrap this up:
'The class are getting it wrong'- class is a collective noun, therefore the correct verb is 'is'.
This is strictly grammatically correct.
However, if you say 'The class are getting it wrong' and you refer to the class as a collection of individuals, 'are' is what you mean. You should- strictly- say 'The members of the class are getting it wrong', so that the verb 'are' refers to the plural 'members'.
It's a laziness of which we are all guilty, though. I often say something like 'should be good', which is two verbs and an adjective, with no noun (which would be 'it'😉. This is grammatically incorrect, but the meaning remains clear.

Can anyone translate "whorjweorj34832423" into English? I'm kinda curious as to what that means 😂

I thought the meaning of what I said was clear, apparantly not.
I should have said "The members of the class are getting it wrong" as this is clearly (or so I thought) what I meant, but I didn't and was grammatically wrong to do so. The hoopla wasn't really needed if you all knew the meaning.

Oh you can just shut up, haha.
I knew I was grammatically wrong and I can admit that all day. I was just arguing that it's acceptable, which it is.
