how do ya like them bananas? 🙂

You think that's bad....on this one message board, a bunch of people have armies of flashing neon-colored dancing bananas as their signatures. It is THE most annoying thing I've ever seen.

Yes but I know everyone is going to laugh at this coming from me, I'm kind of bored with every discussion ending in an ego fest or argument.

Is there any chance we could stop shovelling stuff on top of the topic so that it can still be exhumed without mechanical assistance.

Hey, I tried replying on topic (replied to your post about how proficient people think they are) and it got ignored 😛

What's going on? Why is competent spelling, grammar (yes, the title was intentional) and punctuation such a novelty nowadays?

here 🙂 And I have no real clue why this happens....

I do!

I think it is because people are becoming lazier and want a quick way to do everything. So instead of actually bothering to learn things such as grammar properly, they rape the English language and try and pass it off by saying that as long as they are understood it's okay.

Note that most of the people who use crap like text speak are young teens, btw.

Mobile Phone text message.

Do you think the laziness simply obscures writing skills, or actually hinders them?

That's about as on topic as we could get, actually. Well done!

I hate that. I won't even use text speak in text messages.

I sometimes write 'y', or 'u' as a question, without anything else.

It's usually when I'm slouched back in the chair and I know it'll save some stretching.

Huzzah, I managed to get a thread BACK on topic as opposed to derailing it!

I don't know, actually. I think it depends. If someone actually does know proper grammar, spelling, etc., yet is lazy online or in texts, then it's just obscuring it. But if you see something like someone posting up a story they've written, or a paper or assignment, and it's riddled with poor grammar and text speak-type spellings, then I'd say that it's hindered them.
