It should be noted that Mar-Vell was noticeably amped, was only growing stronger and was a bit crazy IIRC out of desperation, wanted Thor to kill him to save the Universe or whatever.
For the record, Thor's briefly traded shots with that Thanos. Thor's obviously intended to be much closer to Thanos than Mar-Vell in power based on what I've read. There's no denying that unless you've read something I haven't.

And? Thor could clearly kill classic Mar-Vell with ease if he wanted to. Heck, he's done it to tougher opponents.
Yes, Thor lost to Mar-Vell twice but we have no idea how much more powerful he is now that he's powered by Phoenix energy or whatever. Thor being injured also muddies the water.
Yea, right. Thor being much more powerful than -regular- Mar-Vell isn't even debatable.
Something that Mar-Vell could never do straight up as far as I've seen, I know eating the doppleganger made him more complete spiritually or whatever stuff was going on with the butterfly but where did it say that he was weakened in power? Masterson was really rocking Thanos during the Infinity Gauntlet and Pip claimed that Thor would give Thanos a very tough fight on a regular day for whatever that's worth.
Anyways, the intent is clear, Thor would put up a good fight against Thanos straight up and is much more powerful than Mar-Vell who's like a cosmic Captain America.
