Its not impossible, there are cases where it was done well. It just requires a little imagination on the writers' part. Its best when the top tier character is just nonchallontly going along with the street leveller knowing he could end it all himself, for example, Superman/Batman

Galactus - "DURRR. I HUNGER, HERALD, GO FIND ME PLANETS TO EAT!"

Later...

Galactus - "Oh, the universe is so cruel. I cannot metabolize the energies of stars to sustain me. I am forced to eat inhabited planets."
Surfer - "But master, *I* can draw energy from the stars and you can then feed on the stellar energy me and your other heralds have metabolized, to sustain you."

Apparently, Galactus cannot make logical deductions that require more than one step.
