I can see where you are coming from... I just dont see anything wrong with this version of Hulk, thats all. Hulk has numerous of incarnations and him switching back in forth doesn't mean the writing is bad. Hulk is bringing in more fans, so Marvel must be doing something right.
Hulk isn't bringing in more fans though. The sales numbers have tanked to as low as it ever got under Aaron or whoever (i.e. the danger zone for a book hiatus, reboot or writer change), hence the latest relaunch to try and give the sales a shot in the arm.
I LOVE Waid's Daredevil but his Hulk has been so, so, so underwhelming. It's not even bad as such it's just completely nondescript. There is almost no overarching plot linking the whole thing together and the entire premise of the series (Banner being proactive instead of reactive etc) is basically something that Pak and Peter David did much, much better a long, long time ago.
The characterisation (or lack thereof) on the Hulk becomes a much bigger problem when Banner is treated as a complete dick, there are no convincing rogues 17 issues in, and the supporting cast are as vanilla and forgettable as I think it is possible for a set of characters to be. Seriously, what was Waid thinking with these guys? What possible reason has he given any reader to care one bit about any of them?
He's getting another chance to make it right with the relaunch so fingers crossed he improves but his run has been bitterly disappointing to date, and the tanking sales figures reflect that cold hard truth.
