Like what's already been said, "Christmas" is a celebration in the darkest time of the year. Before Christians celebrated the birth of christ, Christians whole celebration was the resurection.
Pagan's celebrated the birth of Mithra on December 25. The Christian church could not outlaw pagan celebrations, so they Adopted them: ie Christmas.
Infact Jesus' whole story, son of god, virgin mother, was taken from the Persian son of God Mithra.
Back then the church had a philosophy of "live and let live". That philosophy infact gave away their right to control how people celebrate the birth of Christ.
The 12 days of christmas, came from the burning the Yule Log.
You see in the late 18 hundreds America turned Christmas into what it was today. They did not want the "carnival" christmas of England. Nor, since seperation of church and state, did they want Christmas to be a purely religious based holiday.

christmas is the birth of christ. if you do not believe in christ, what right do you have to celebrate?
Well technically Christ was never born in December as the alledged controversy has led. So I mean, anyone can celebrate Christmas (since of course the meaning of Christmas in the presents).

I, as an atheist, celebrate X-mas as the epitome of the corruption of religion, and the total dominance of corporate America over the weak-minded population of the world.
overanalyze much?

Yes it's fine. Jeez, I celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah, and me and my family are not very religious. Christmas for me has always been about family gathering and overall joy, not the birth of Christ.
That's stupid, you're an idiot. find your own athist holiday to celebrate
Demarest, you are the idiot here. Not only are you showing your ass by bashing members and acting like an @$$hole, you're coming off as a complete douchebag. I'm an atheist and I don't celebrate the religious aspect of Xmas for obvious reasons, however my christian family does and I spend quality time with them while they celebrate the birth of their saviour. What about all these other people who don't celebrate July 4th as the day our great country won its independence? Some people dont give a damn about anything except going and buying a crapload of fireworks and popping them off in the sky. Would you call them un-American and unpatriotic? Xmas is also a time for family, love of your fellow man, and a time for sharing and giving. Thas what I celebrate. I don't need material possessions, I need my family. Grow the f*ck up, kid.
