The word 'Negro'.

Methinks it is the same as saying Caucasian, but I've been brought up as it being a racial slur.

Thoughts?

Well, if a white person can be described as being 'Caucasian', why can't a black person be described as being a 'Negro'? What makes more word more racially offensive than the other?

thats what i would love to know.
thats like saying a jewish person is a jew.
where is the raciasm in that please do tell.

What I really have a problem with is black people refering to themselves as 'African American' when the word isn't even a color, and they have never been to Africa in their lives. Aren't they being racist simply be using the word 'African' to describe themselves? They are saying that all people in Africa are black, and there may well be a few white people who may take offence at those two words.

indeed, i think they fear haveing the sence of where they came from and who they are.
who knows these days.....

Negro means the COLOR black in Spanish, genuis. It's a derogatory word in spanish however, that means "black person"

In South America they use the word "negro" to address black people, but its out of disrespect usually. Trust me, im South American, i know.

The same way they EASILY use "gordo" or "flako" to call someone by thier physical characteristics, theres no being "politically correct" in South America.

I think the word he MEANT was "n-i-g-g-e-r-"

Calling a black person "oye, negro" in spanish is like saying "hey nig-ger" in English.

Because...Caucasian does not mean "white" it is a name of the scientific name of that race.

What prefix in the word Causcasian means "white person" ?

"Negro" is not a scientific name, in spanish "negro" mean the COLOR BLACK, and is wrongfully used as a term of disrespect towards black people.

Since when is 'negro' a derogatry word 'in spanish'.

It is A word in spanish which was made derogatry when used against black people. Negro in spanish still means black - its a name of a colour, and is not derogatry in Spanish.

In "Bamboozled", the main character asks people to call him a negro, because he views it as a description of an intelligent black man. I don't really think of it as a racial slur, just old-fashioned... But then I'm not black.

In Costa Rica I was told that a black person is refered to as a "Tico negro" in the same way a white person is refered to as "Tico blanco". Maybe it's different in South America, but from what I've heard it's no worse than calling somebody black in English.

well im dave in ever part of the world.

The concept of race is so stupid it gives me headaches.

Maybe, but my question to you is this:

Is the concept of different races any MORE stupid than some of the people currently populating this forum/thread?

My answer is no.

Moderator PLEASE re READ my post.

I already stated that NEGRO means black in spanish.

However, in SOUTH AMERICA it is often used as a deragatory term to refer to black people.

They way they called Native South Americans "CHOLO"...
South America is a country of MUCH politcal incorrectness, not to mention massive racism.

My family COMES from South America, so I'd think I know more about it....thanks
