wtf?
Fire doesn't have any weight, either, Ush.
Is fire not part of science?
Lightsabers have changed little in the thousands of years of their employ by the Jedi Knights. Those who believe the Jedi order began on the ancient world of Ossus point to the abundance of Adegan crystals in the system as proof. These crystals are ideal for the creation of lightsabers, as they focus the energy released from a saber's power cell into the tight, blade-like beam. Early lightsabers did not have self-contained power cells, and were instead connected by a conducting cable to a belt-worn power pack.
Once unleashed, the power channels through a positively charged continuous energy lens at the center of the handle. The beam then arcs circumferentially back to a negatively charged high energy flux aperture. A superconductor transfers the power from the flux aperture to the power cell. As a result, a lightsaber only expends power when its blade cuts through something. So efficient is the blade, that it does not radiate heat unless it comes into contact with something.
The blade's color depends on the nature of the jewel it springs from, and while its length is fixed in the case of a single-jewel lightsaber, lightsabers equipped with multiple crystals can have their length varied by rotating a knob that allows the focusing crystal activator to subtly modify the refraction pattern between the gems.
With the Sith long believed extinct, lightsaber dueling occurred only within the practice chambers of the Jedi Temple. To a Jedi, a lightsaber is not just a weapon. It is a means of concentrating attention and becoming attuned with the Force.
Anyways, someone at Starwars.com seems think there is a scientific explanation that fits.
But seeing as a sabre has a physical presence and something that has a physical presence can't be weightless, then that only highlights how useless it is to try and apply actual science.
Where is the canonical source that it is weightless? If it was not truly weightless, Dooku's curved hilt would do next to nothing, as it would hardly shifts the center of gravity one centimeter.
You haven't displayed the slightest bit of evidence worth a damn for anything. If you can't be bothered to look for the quotes, fine, But they are there, and if you find them you will see.
Everyone- well, everyone reasonable- knows that GL never, ever, ever considered the Sith to be a race. It;s a totally apocryphal EU invention.
I know that Lucas has also said the EU is an alternate universe. He does not oversee the EU, the EU exists in a separate continuity. Seeing as this is within the EU forum and EU sources are permissable, it's pointless to assume that because Lucas never intended for the Sith to be a race (which is true in movie canon) that it isn't a race in EU, which it is clearly shown.
KotOR is one of several later EU sources that remarked about the physical strength of the Ancient Sith.
Friendship is one thing. Hostile clique mentality is naother, You are turning this place into a hostile wasteland that new posters are afraid to go near, and provoking any number of unpleasant confrontationns
So doing what this thread is intended for is "hostile clique mentality"?
Even The Anomaly, who hates most EU and rarely ever steps into the Versus Forum comes in and makes an educational post about debating in general.
Unless the intention of the staff is to have a bunch of "Yoda wins" and "I agree" and "Tulak wins!!11" posts in the area, then we are doing exactly what the area was made for. If you notice the theme of things, Numan did not logically support his arguments and started the name calling first.
Sorry but, "you can not apply physics" is not a logical answer. In that case, you will need secondary evidence to support that the weapon is superior.
Sorry, but elitist is what the community here is- as has been observed by many difficulties caused by this forum over time, and continually observable inside the threads. I can tell you rtight now that this area has a very low reputation indeed, beaten only by the poor repuation of the Comic Book vs. area.
And the Comic Book versus also happens to be one of the most frequently posted in sections on the entire board.
I don't know if it's the intention of these people with these "opinions" to squelch logically permissable debate.
That strikes me as a comment of no relevance to anything being talked about. Sabres don't need weight to do damage, I do not accept (nor, really, should anyone) that sheer 'power' will ever win a swordfight where armour is not a factor, and you can't even prove that they are weightless- that's debatable.
No, but they also would have less momentum.
As much as you're arguing that science can't be applied, the nature of science makes it applicable. Unless Star Wars is a universe where heavier objects are easier to stop than lighter objects, the sword's mass will give it greater momentum. When a sword user attacks a lightsaber user, he will have greater difficulty in stopping the attack than the sword user simply because he can not generate the force necessary to stop the sword with minimal torque.
But seeing as a sabre has a physical presence and something that has a physical presence can't be weightless, then that only highlights how useless it is to try and apply actual science.
No one argued that lightsabers can't cut.
On the contrary, we are pointing out that lightsabers can't cut through a sith sword, as shown in the scan. And also shown is that the sith sword is perfectly capable of cutting through objects themselves.
I don't like this premise that we can't use logic and science to support our points. To argue that demanding factual evidence is a crux of debate.
I don't know about you, but I have never denied a well-formed debate that complies with debating conventions and produces established evidence and logically permissable deductions thereof. This idea that there's a group mentality when someone who is hardly a member of the "group" (in this case The Anomaly) only seems to show that the poster has not been able to establish his case.
If you wish the versus forum to be solely a popularity contest, let us know, so we can stop with using logic and reason.
Wow Ush, I'm surprised at you to be honest. I used to have a great deal of respect for you. This kinda of "authoritative" power you are attempting to impose isnt helping to say the least, "Appeal to authority" is itself a logical fallacy. I'm not inclined to believe you simply because your the MOD of these boards, I dont accept what you say just because you say them. I have had good arguments with you in the past, and I respected your logic, it was always very good. However in this case, you are simply wrong.
If a man can lift a 50-100 pound sword with no difficulty and swing it at speeds equal to that of a person that can swing a weightless sword around. (as GL himself has said a lightsaber is weightless). Then the heavily weighted sword will have far more force behind it. Its pretty simple to understand. The speed issue here is irrelevant since the Sith can swing their swords at speeds equal to the speed that the Jedi can swing a lightsaber. Basically what we are saying is that to the sith, the swords SEEM essentially as weightless as a lightsaber is to a Jedi, since the Sith are so strong. If a regular person (of normal human strength) was to be using the sword then that person would get mashed buy a person with a lightsaber. But this is not the case due to the Sith strength.
So in as simple terms as I can put it. If two people are using weapons, one is heavy and one has no weight at all, both cannot penetrate the other, and both can be swung by their respective users at equal speeds, then the sheer weight and force behind the person swinging a 100 lb sword at speeds as fast as the other person would essentially chop down the person using a unweighted weapon because they would be unable to counter the force of the weighted weapon.

Exactly as I was saying.
Great post.

Risking a Ban?
For what?
If you (or I) were to be banned for stating our opinions then I would never return to these forums ever again.
I've been here since 2003 and I would STILL never come back if we were to be banned, even if it was for a day or two. Hell, I'd consider leaving if we were officially warned for stating our opinions.
The concept of it is ridiculous.
