Fifa Germany 2006 - world cup thread

What a wonderful display of futbol by the Czechs. The way they dominated that game in every aspect was just pure class, offensively, defensively and everything in between and they supposedly did it against the best team the yanks have ever fielded. And they did all this without arguably their best striker, Baros and a midfield that's been hampered by injuries. If they can stay healthy and that's a big if, then I have no problem seeing them beating Brazil and winning the WC. I know it's a lot to take away from 1 match but they really impressed me. Btw, that the same result the EA people came away with when they did their WC simulation.

Italy disappointed me once again with their chosen style of play for this WC. They got a solid result but again they're employing the same old strategy from previous WCs of score 1 and then hold back and count on your defense to shut the other team out, all the while leaving their poor fans agonizing till the very end. I'm sorry but this just won't work in this WC, there are far too many talented teams out there with skilled players that can score. They won't be able to shut out everyone and if they keep playing like that, they'll be out soon enuff. On a positive note, I do like the young legs on that squad and the 4-3-1-2 formation that Trapatoni was always hesitant to employ but also the lack of experience of a Vieri, Del Piero or Inzaghi I believe will also hurt them in the end.

It will be interesting to see how Brazil and France come out, can't wait.

Oh, great win by the Aussies, can't believe Japan played that poorly.

Baros is not the Czechs' best striker. Not only is Koller much better, but Baros is also quite a poor player in his own right. He has very little awareness, because he plays with his head down, he backs into defenders constantly and illegally, but always seems to get away with it, and his finishing is extremely irregular. The only reason he was top scorer at Euro '04 was because he was playing with an outstanding midfield and a very unselfish striking partner. Just watch him play in the English league, with a slightly less talented team. He's nothing.

Gilardino is definitely overrated. Not quite as much as that idiot Inzaghi, or Christian Vieri, but still.

Woah! You can smell that a mile off! Czech Republic played well, but they're never anywhere near the level of Brasil. Regardless of what a video-game has predicted! Pff.

I was impressed with Ghana today, they looked very patchy at times both defensively and when trying to string passes together (they seemed to want to play everything very short), but like the Ivorians they were full of running, energy and creative verve, and Michael Essien was a titan in the middle, best player on the field by far. I was disappointed by Italy as a whole really, their new improved strikeforce was a let down, Toni and Gilardino looked a little toothless, and only Pirlo really got his teeth into the match. It may be a cliche, but Italy won that game on experience more than anything.

USA are definatly by no means a poor side, it took a very professional and quality performance to beat them

I did say arguably. And I disagree, Baros is their best striker, I'd even concede Roiscky but Koller? Ridiculous, the only way he can score is with his head. Baros is much quicker and can score in a variety of ways and as you said he proved it in the Euro's. So just because he plays with a sub par midfield on his club team you blame him? I don't get that logic. If he didn't play well with the Czech's midfield then you might have an argument but it's obvious he does, so you don't.
