Well it looks like England might face zee Germans in round 16.

wouldn't zat be nice?

not for you i fear.

oh please.... are we watching the same games here?

I have to agree there, England havent given Germany a reason to fear them. Whether they can in the next game remains to be seen.

There's still an increased will to beat Germany, even for the most "I'm not a patriot" of England fans.

Sad really, because you can bet Germany don't hold any such grudge.

why of course we do...you think they're not eager to win against England and they still got a score to settle with the sea lions...i mean come on we're talking about..a team that just peed their knickers because of the Trinis just this morning...

You might, but you don't speak for all of Germany.

On the whole, England have much more of a remaining distaste for Germany than likewise. Eager to beat the team, sure. However I've not encountered any German saying anti-English remarks over something that happened decades ago.

That's not true...cause THE BALL WASN'T ****ING IN. You championship thieves.

And we sunk our fleet in your harbour...GO GERMANY.

what? do you speak for all of England?

and what exactly has that to do with football? you mean you win because you hate us more? what kind of bullshit logic is that? go ahead and ask Beckham, Rooney or Lampard if they give a fakk about what happened decades ago...Jesus, this is exactly the where i don't want to go with this fanatism thingy..you see i lived in London, i got loads of friends from all over the UK but never in those 20 years i have dealt with Brits, no one ever came to me with this "We hate you, because you did this and this bla bla..." and project that into a bloody football match...

and i'm glad no german encountered me with harsh anti-england remarks...because that's not a person i want to have a conversation with..

You dont live in Britain, so how can you say that? we dont hold grudges against germans, thankyou.

He doesn't live in Britain? What?

dont hold a grudge against Germany, just wanna beat them... i dont hold a grudge against Arsenal but whenever the north london derby rolls around i want Spurs to win.

there was a nice rendition of "there were 10 german bombers in the aiiir, there were 10 german bombers in the aiir, there were 10 german bombers, 10 german bombers, 10 german bombers in the air... and the RAF from England shot em down, the RAF from England shot em down, RAF from England, RAF from England, RAF from England shot em down" at the pub today though during the T&T match for some reason.

There are lots of so called football fans that hold a grudge against Germany and use the war to bring up that hatred, luckily none of them post here it seems. I grew up on a pretty rough estate in London full of National Front Chelsea and Millwall fans who certainly had alot of hatred for the Germans and most of it was because of the war (to be honest they didnt need much reason to hate anyone who wasnt a white Englishman though).
I see the Germans as fierce rivals, its always been that way (as long as i can remember). We've had some heartbreaking defeats over the years and alot of them have been to Germany, so its only natural that you want to exact some form of revenge when the teams next meet.
The kind of people who use it to drag up memories of a war they didnt even fight in are not football fans in my mind.

I live in East London, was born here and have had the displeasure of experiencing moronic, xenophobic football fanaticism from England toward Germany, to one degree or another, for as long as I've been able to retain the memories.

The irony is, the team want to win, but you can bet they're not as rabidly fanatic for all the wrong reasons. I'm not saying every person in England is like that, of course not. Collectively as a nation, there has always been a distaste for Germany in this area. Be it playful or not, it always happens. You see it in the World Cup music videos, there are DVDs of England beating Germany 5-1 (not of many other teams), when England played Germany in Euro 96 I believe, The Sun posted pics of English players wearing war helmets. The headline said "Achtung, Germany!". There are beach towels for sale with the 5-1 score on. Why? Because a lot of Brits go to Spain and Spanish areas, which is where a lot of Germans go, coincidentally.

You've lived in England and not had any problems, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. The pathetically one sided rivalry between them is ripe here, and anyone can see it.

I live in East London, but of course, I can't possibly be from England, because I'm not supporting the team whilst in the pub shouting like some gutter-bred yob, right?

We beat you in 96, hehe. Maybe there isn't so much rivalry on the German side because we seem to win usually.

England struggled for that whole match. Hislop never had to make a serious save until the end, and as someone said to me today, the commentator said they need Rooney, so they might as well admit being shit.

Trinidad and Tobago held them to a draw until the dying minutes and had more chances than England. A win is a win, but they won't get anywhere playing like that against Argentina, Holland, Italy if they keep up their style this time, Brazil if they get into the swing of things.

I think you were watching a different match. Trindad and Tobago had one close chance - the one that Terry cleared off the line - but apart from that they had nothing. The only threat was when we were playing with 2 at the back and the rest in midfield or up-front.
