And in the Final fight with Doom I actually pretty much soloed the fight with just Thor and his spread lighting attack.
I think he was also the only character to kind of get the complete package game wise. Strength, melee, ranged, flight, cheapness, and effectiveness.
Also note I never outright called him the best, Other people do things very well, but in terms of playing through the game solo I think he is.

If you amp someone enough, anyone could really solo the game.
My Thor started off with Iron Man... and my Thor pretty much took out everyone... in fact, I think I remember Thor pretty much soloing Loki easily... and he pretty much passed all of the computer simulations easily that I could include him in...
The only fight I don't think he did, was against Galactus.

Iron Man's kinda beastly. That Tiger Uppercut or whatever the hell is hardcore, and he's good with the long-range energy stuff too.Cyclops is good, though not as useful as the XML games.

Also, Ghost Rider is pretty good, and Surfer has a sexcellent attack that you'll find out about when you unlock him.
I wanted to really like Cyke. A good energy user who can stand back and just compliment the punchy types. His attacks all have good knock-back too.
But then there's others who can do that nearly as well (Iron Man, for instance) who can handle themselves better in a fist fight. Which is important, because unless you're controlling Cyke yourself, the A.I. takes him right into the thick of things about 3/4 of the time.

nano assault for me was great with iron man...
cyke for me, is better than he was in xml... he's more versatile, and more powerful too imo...
