edit: i thought i read "best martial artist"
as for best martial art, there is no such thing. it depends on the practicioner.
look at Lyoto Machida. His style is Karate and he's the only sucessful mixed martial artist with foundation in that style.
a good combination would be Muay Thai, Sambo and Greco-Roman Wrestling.

Yo, in all of your opinions, what is the best martial art? If you don't think there is a best, just list a few.
right now
Pound For Pound: Fedor Emelianenko
Heavyweights: Fedor Emelianenko & Randy Couture
Light Heavyweights: Shogun Rua & Rampage Jackson
Middleweights: Denis Kang & Dan Henderson
Welterweights: Georges St. Pierre & Hayato Mach Sakurai
Lightweights: Shinya Aoki & BJ Penn

Greco Roman? Catch Wrestling? Shooto?those are all martial arts.
By definition I guess they are martial arts, but I think people in general(atleast I know I do) categorize Martial Arts along the lines of fighting methods from Asia(Karate, Kung Fu, Tao Kwan Doe, ect) and wrestling(Greco,Catch,Shooto, ect) as two different things. So when someone asks me about martial arts I think of specific Eastern Fighting techniques. I'm not saying I'm right and your wrong, but that this is just my intepretation of Martial Arts.
Originally posted by wuTaJudo is a form of wrestling and originates from Japan. Same with Shooto. But i can see why people would think that.

Originally posted by Caps Conscienceyea thats a good combination. That's pretty much Big Nog's style. Boxing and Brazilian JiuJitsu
Boxing and Submission wrestling works best for me, but it isn't the best combo for someone else. I will incorporate some muy thai in the clinch but for the most part I stick to these two disciplines.

Aside from leg kicks I really don't use my legs to strike. To me it's to much of a gamble and you can open yourself up to take downs. It's just not worth it IMO. But other guys can make it work. It's not the style its the practitioner of the style that make each martial art good or bad.
Bah! You guys didn't use the martial arts thread.

I usually look at this in "tiers".Striking: Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing
Clinch: Judo, Muay Thai, Greco Roman wrestling
Grappling(ground): Brazilian Juijutsu, Judo, Freestyle/Folkstyle Wrestling.
Obviously, there are other styles that have been put to good use. However, combat sports are disproportionately dominated by these "Top Tier" styles.
Damnit, you stole my upset pick. I think Chuck will take Jardine(Sp?) I'm not sure about Sanchez vs Fitch, that fight is too close to call but since I like Fitch better I'll use that as a tiebreaker and say Fitch and I too will go with Griffin, I know he's the major underdog, but there is nothing more dangerous than a man who has nothing to lose, (i.e Matt Serra vs GSP)
1.Liddell
2.Fitch
3.Griffin
1. Chuck
2. Shogun: I know anything is possible, but I really see Shogun taking this without much trouble. Why do you all think Forrest will take this?
3. Fitch for the same reason wuTa said. I dislike Sanchez.
On a side note, did anyone see the picture they used for Shogun? He looks really scruffy now.
1. Liddell-Jardine:
styles make fights, IF jardine can avoid the counters, he can easily land those heavy shots straight on. jardine's weird stance might play an advantage for him, but im gonna say
Winner: Liddell
2. Griffin-Shogun:
Shogun has a big disadvantage. No knees to the head on the ground, no soccer kicks to the head, no stomps etc...Griffin has nothing to lose and a win would be equivalent to a title shot. I've seen Griffin's fight and he's good but not great. I can see this going the distance with Shogun being the aggressor. Should be an entertaining fight. Shogun had trouble with Nakamura and he got outboxed. Forrest has stronger hands than Nakamura, so this going to be an interesting fight.
Winner: Shogun
3. Fitch vs Sanchez
Im not a Diego fan, but he is one of the most aggressive WW's out there. You guyz remember when Koscheck took him down, Diego got back up real fast. I'll be cheering for Fitch but i say
Winner: Sanchez
4. Nakamura vs Machida
I really want Nakamura to win this. He's an adept mixed martial artist. He stood with Shogun and took it to the distance. Machida is a really patient fighter and he always fight smart.
Winner: Machida
and here are Couture's picks. He doesn't really explain why he picked who he did.
Light Heavyweight : Chuck Liddell (20-4) vs. Keith Jardine (11-4) – LIDDELL"Somebody’s going down in this one, more than likely Jardine. I think the knockout will come in the first or second, depends on Chuck. If he’s a little tentative at first it may take him a little longer. Jardine’s gonna wade in. That’s what he does.”
---------------------------------
Light Heavyweight: Forrest Griffin (14-4) vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (16-2) – GRIFFIN
“I think he’s going to beat him every round. I just think the rules are different, and there’s a few other factors I’m not going to bring to light right now.”
---------------------------------
Welterweight: Jon Fitch (19-2-1) vs. Diego Sanchez (19-1)
“Diego makes me pay every time I go against him, but I’m gonna go with Fitch.”
--------------------------------
Light Heavyweight: Lyoto Machida (10-0) vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura (11-6) – MACHIDA
“Machida’s gonna beat him up.”
----------------------------------
Lightweight: Tyson Griffin (9-1) vs. Thiago Tavares (16-0) - GRIFFIN
“Tyson’s going beat him, It’s going to be the fight of the night again. It’s going to be a brawl.”

I see what some of you are saying about not underestimating a man with nothing to lose. By that same token we shouldn't underestimate arguably the number one light heavywieght in world either.
