I think almost all the components are in place. Notice how I said almost.
#1) There are major issues on the line. Can Essex or Kemoeatu step up? And where is the depth at guard if Mahan is going to play center? And if he doesn't play center, who is? It's not going to be Chukky, and I don't think Philip is ready. Simmons at center? Are you kidding me? Will Spaeth be kept in for two TE sets? Who will be blocking when Miller is running routes? Bottom line: What are they going to do with Spaeth, Tuman, and Miller? Faneca will be auditioning for a new job (unfortunately), so the prediction of his play will be a mystery this year. He still is tops in the league at pulling, but his pass protection is declining. Marvel Smith needs another repeat performance at LT.
#2) Anthony Smith (3 damn 'Smiths' in the starting lineup is a bit much - especially two 'A. Smith's.'😉 will be the key in the secondary. First things first. Will Tomlin release Troy to roam around and do as he pleases? By keeping LeBeau, there's possibility that the zone blitz will remain intact. I have suspicions they may be heading towards a 4-3 for the first time since 1982, maybe in 2008. If that happens, Troy's play level will be restricted but Hampton's will rise. Now back to Anthony Smith. He is a playmaker, but alot is going to be asked of him this year. I think he is heads and shoulders above Ryan Clark, so this will be his year to make an impact. I'd like to see him maintain that aggressive demeanor he seems to possess. In the past, Steeler safeties have been anything but that. Remember Flowers, Shields, & Hope? They were excellent tacklers but rarely made a play on the ball. As far as the corners, McFadden is on the rise and Townsend will fit nicely in the nickel & dime packages. Everyone's question is, what the hell is Ike going to do? Is he going to bring his Denver 2005 game or his Denver 2006 game? Hopefully, these 2 new LB's (Timmons & Woodley) will add the pass rush that was lacking a bit last year and make the guys in the secondary better...'cause they need it.
If these two areas can straighten themselves out, I think they will be okay.
