Final Fantasy XIII

I having a really hard time trying to figure out proper paradigm arrangements. How do I make a specific character a commando/sentinel/medic/etc?

I just got the ability to upgrade my weapons. This is gonna be a lot of fun to mix and match shit together.

At first, characters can only use specific roles. They gain more as you go through the game, but they won't necessarily be good at it.

If you go into the Menu and select Paradigm, you can generate a new one and then edit that to have the specific roles you want, or change ones you have already.

I actually really liked Vanille. By the end of the game I'd stopped liking Light, Snow and Hope (never liked the piss poor spunk monkey). Vanille was a refreshing change (for the most part, less so at the end) from the bollocks you come to expect from a JRPG nowadays. (If you want to know what sort of thing I'm talking about watch the Eternal Sonata ending,)

I have secretly hoping for her and Sazh to get it on (although I knew it would never happen). Although their relationship seemed quite platonic... There were times though were I swear they were flirting.

Do people just forget there is a manual and in game help functions... Let alone on screen tutorials? You're up to the point were you can upgrade weapons but still don't know how to change class properly?

You get the option to learn secondary roles for all characters after a certain chapter(forgot which) but for story purposes it is better to ignore those because they are three times more expensive and don't offer as much HP/Strength/Magic boost as their primary roles.

Some Paradigms I recommend are:

Tri-Disaster (RAV/RAV/RAV) is excellent at building chain gauge, but the lack of a commando can make it tricky. Best used after you have at least hit the enemy 2 or 3 times with a com and then go TriDisaster to almost instantly break them.

Cerberus (COM/COM/COM) once a character has reach it's stagger point and you are near its max. It will dish a lot of damage.

If you don't have 3 COMs in your party you can do a COM/COM/RAV(Agression) and it works as well.

Decimation (COM/RAV/SYN)---Diversity (COM/RAV/MED)---Relentless Assault(COM/RAV/RAV) are great for just walking around and grind since the battles will go smoothly since you will always be attacking while healing and making your party stronger: HASTE is awesome. Only reason I ever used Sazh during the story since he gets it before Hope.

Combat Clinic AKA Sen/Med/Med is the best tool for surviving devastating attacks that would otherwise PAWN you. I cannot count the times it has saved my ass.

Tortoise(Sen/Sen/Sen) is a must have for the hardest battles in the game.

Relentless Assault to stagger and then shifting to Tri-Disaster is my favorite, personally. Things sure blow up fast that way most of the time.

A good one for some hard battles I've found is COM/MED/SYN (used sort of mid battle, to maintain stagger while protecting)

I didn't stutter, spoony. Nor did I ask for a sarcastic rebuttal. I expected more from you, honestly.

I'm not a big RPG'er, and this new battle system, while very engrossing and fun, is still new to me.

Thanks for your help.

It just seems stupid that someone would consult a forum before looking in the game's manual. It's just lazy. It's not about being an RPG expert, or anything of the sort, I had as much of an idea about the system as you prior to starting to the game. I just managed to read the on screen tutorials and the manual. It may seem petty but I can't stand people not willing to put in a little effort to learn things for themselves. This case is no better then asking "Hey guys, got this new microwave, just unpacked it. How do you defrost something?"

And why you expected better from me I don't know.

Again:

Thank you for your unbiased, un-inflammatory, and educated retort.

I will think twice before asking questions to your sort ever again.

Spoony, ditch the attitude. If you want to post elitist BS take it to the gamefaqs forums where that crap belongs. He asked reasonable questions about FF XIII in a thread that is about FFXIII. The fact is the battle system is complicated and what he's asking isn't really explained in depth until later on in the game.

Anyways, Imp: Right now I suggest just using relentless assault and switching over to a healing setup when you need it. With only two people in your party (which is how it will be for a while, for the most part) you will need to switch between those two pretty frequently. Against tougher opponents buff/debuff with Synergist and Sabatuers, if you can. It will help greatly.

Much appreciated. I have been using a lot of relentless assault mixed with diversity, and that seems to help me with the tougher creatures like in the Incubus, the Succubus, and that slow rusty robot drone who moves slow but deals a shit load of damage.

Relentless Assault/Diversity/Tri-Disaster will definitely carry you a long way in this game. You don't need to worry much about creating different Paradigms at first, especially as you won't have enough roles to really do so.

Also, am I the only one who thinks that FF XIII blows God of War III out of the water, graphics wise? I've been debating this with a few friends who go in GOW favor. I disagree. The graphics in FF XIII, to me, are a new standard.

I haven't played GOW3 and I only played FFXIII on the 360 with its lower-res, but IMO it might because of the design. Some areas are just breathtaking. I also like how well modeled the characters are. More often than not I find myself just taking a abreak to look around the environment's details.

FFXIII has some amazing graphics, particularly in the environments. The crystal forest place looks absolutely breathtaking.

Agreed.

Chapter 12 looked amazing as well. In fact Chapter 12 is my favorite chapter in the game.

I just got the ability to summon Odin. It took me two tries, but I finally am starting to get the hang of chaining successful moves.

As far as chaining, keep in mind that you want to hit the mob a few times with a commando, then it's usually best to go full ravager to get to the stagger point as quickly as possible, then go back to commando as they do mass damage once the enemy is staggered. Later in the game I find it's best to switch to 2 commando's with a ravager/medic (depending on how deadly the mob is while staggered) once the enemy is deep into it's stagger percentage to inflict as much damage as possible during that stagger stage.

Think about what happens on the screen at any given time. There are no movements done in battle that aren't simply you choosing which animation you want to show. And out of battle there are only simple movements. GoW3 is a fully fledged action game, with many things on screen mobing around independent of eachother. It's going to take a hit. It's the same reason driving games look so good.

To say it blows it out of the water though. Not a chance. Not in gameplay graphics anyway. It's chalk and cheese.
