What utter bullshit.
“We inhabit thegalaxyworld that arose as a result of their decisions, just as our descendents will inherit thegalaxyworld that will arise from our own. It is the responsibility of each generation to choose well.”
Dude just got schooled by Zonama Sekot b*tch! Living Planet ftw!
The world is what we make it. Being a selfish coward and only dealing with your own shit is close-minded and short-sighted. We can't stick our heads in the sand.
What a strange avenue of attack. I'm a bit surprised at the strength of the response you're giving. Not that it is negative, (because there are things about the book from which the quote is pulled that I'm hesitant to embrace) but the tenacity with which you are emoting to this long-dead writer.
Edit: from the wiki article about the book, whose title I had to find from a different website entirely:
Levi always felt that satisfying work was essential for a happy life, and the honest hands-on work of someone who also used his intellect was the highest form of work. Faussone was his ideal. Life is a series of problems which one has to use ones brains and ones hands to resolve.

The first quote you provided is something that I personally have a problem with. The concept of inaction and apathy is one that sickens me.
Not doing stuff (like helping others) to other people is something I have a problem with. Only doing stuff for your own benefit is either an inherently selfish concept or one born out of fear of doing the wrong thing (like genocide). By only doing good things to others this can be avoided.
No man is an island. We have to look out for each other. Our entire society is built around the concept of co-operation.

But it isn't inaction, or even self-concern. It is self containment. Don't do stuff (like genocides) to other people. Only do stuff (like genocides) that will affect your own life. Much like Crimzon's line about "whatever you want is allowed as long as it doesn't affect anyone else."
