Yeah, I paid 60 dollars for mine as well, US though. Plus I got a free three months with it.

It's not. It's like... 4 dollars cheaper if you buy the 3 month subscription. It's 15 bucks a month normally, whereas the 3 month subscription is 41 dollars. I was looking at the wrong currency type.
Ah, ok.

I also get 3 extra months.
He has a point.

Call me spoiled, but after 5 years of paying $50 for a YEAR long Xbox LIVE subscription, paying 15 dollars a month, or 50 dollars for three months to play TOR seems a little steep.Spending 80 dollars will get you 6 months? Really? So to play a video game for a year it'll cost you roughly 160 dollars?
I mean, that being said, there's more to it than that. 15 dollars a month will get you pretty much all the content in the game, and it's really not that much money at all... but still, the principle is a little annoying. That price isn't even counting the 60 dollars you pay just for the game disk... which only grants you 30 days of playing time.
I paid for 3 months myself. I get an awesome "FOUNDER" title, which helps my ego. Anyways, I understand this to a point. For my part, paying for XBL is something I would dread to do, because I have to pay for the priviledge to play with other people... which is something that most games are geared to do anyways. That's like paying ten bucks extra every tank of gas just so that my brakes don't randomly lock up. It's part of how the system works, you're rich as hell, get the **** off of my back, right? And the worst part is that Microsoft charges extra for DLC that is free elsewhere, overcharges for their games (unlike Steam or Origin sometimes), their technical support is horrid, and the bandwidth is capped.
For TOR though, the cost of the game was extensive, something like 100-200 million. And the work done is nothing short of amazing. This is the first MMO I can say I want to play every day. Even the mighty LotRO didn't make me eager to boot up and explore or kick ass. It is more than I'd pay for any other game. Certainly more than I'd pay for a normal offline game (and I bought the Digital Deluxe version, so I spent what? 10-20 more than most) yet the playing experience has been entirely worth it. I just eat ramen and enjoy.
Plus, it's a sign of patronage for my part. I don't pirate out of spite (when I do, which is incredibly seldom) and I believe in buying CDs, DVDs, etc. of stuff I like, because I know if they don't get money because I'm too cheap to pay for it, they may one day run out of funds or reasons to continue.
So for my part, the subscription is a good investment. And since they just patched the game, added more content, and are actively interested in customer feedback, I'm game.

"Some people are real ****in' stupid. You ever notice that, how many stupid people you run into? Goddamn there's some stupid bastards out there. Carry a pad and pencil with you, you'll come up with twenty names by the end of the day. Think about this; think about how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of 'em are stupider than that."
I love George Carlin. And it's so true to. I run into so many stupid people every day and yet they are the average. Humans are so goddamn stupid.
You know what's funny? Besides George Carlin's ongoing drug problems and paranoia throughout his life? The people that constantly call everybody stupid. They happen to be the most intellectually devoid, as well as the least self aware. Not pointing fingers at you here it's just a trend I've seen over my lifetime.

I think your nose just grew about a foot and a half longer. Maybe you should audition for the next showing of de Bergerac.
I think the trick is to be careful what you use to judge intelligence. My econ class has now spent 2 days defining slope as "rise over run" and there are still people struggling. (The disdain I feel is compounded by the fact that I have taken exactly this class at the high school level; we even used the same powerpoints.) They are clearly not innately talented at the particular kind of abstract reasoning involved. Fine. Whatever. They're good at other things, probably much better than me in at least one area, and human beings no matter what. I'm uncomfortable writing off more than 50% of the bell curve just because I know how to take standardized tests.

Your a nice person. I'm an *******.
On a side note, really? Rise over run is basic algebra.

I can't say I'm quite that bad at understanding math, but I certainly struggle. Yet when it comes to language, reading, philosophy, etc. I've usually operated well above the norm for my classrooms. One thing that's important to consider (as you're noting here) is that intelligence is not one-sided, and I can't say I've met any one person who's omni-intelligent or equally intelligent in all fields.

I worry what makes you harbor this much hate. I suppose I was extremely bitter at your age (and I'm still bitter about some things). It's perfectly normal to realize differences in yourself and others. The "normal" or "average" person isn't interested in being an intellectual, or in achieving intellectual superiority, nor are they necessarily abstract or critical thinkers. Considering that in the history of humanity, literacy above elementary level is still unachieved in much of the world and was rare in our own country not even two generations ago (or less, if you're in West Virginia or Kentucky), it may be that you're expecting far more than both society is capable of giving and also what it is being trained for.
Now, even lame jobs typically require a Bachelor's to even attempt them. As the need for more degrees becomes prevalent in this service/entertainment/sales oriented society, you may see the number of educated and open thinkers increase little by little, until in your old age as you rage against the dying of the light, some young children will marvel at and mock the ignorance and narrow thinking of your generation.
The Aesop's fable part of this is don't judge too freely and absolutely, because seeing a random person in a lapse of judgment isn't any more accurate than say, some random dude online claiming to know your IQ based off of a forum post.
Teh Faunuz:
I approve so much of you right now.
Winning!
Also, Resident Evil 6 is coming out this year, along with Operation Raccoon City, Revelations, Retribution, and Damnation. Oh and Mass Effect 3. Basically, everything about 2012 will be great except for the hellfire and brimstone.
It's not intellectual success I expect, it's when I look at violation of women's rights in the Arab monarchies, the war on reproductive rights championed by the human filth on the right, the bigoted Santorums and David Bahatis of the world, the backward human anachronisms in the Vatican, the bigoted Evangelical blowhards with their bullshit, the Islamist pricks of the Muslim Brotherhood, the ******* hasidic Jews in Israel, my own goddamn parents and the sheer level of their ignorance and bigotry. Human filth, carbon and nitrogen collections of shit. I look at these people, and I realize that I hate them. The sheer amount of unnecessary suffering brought about by ignorance and the self important assholes claiming to know the one and only truth. I hate them, I hate all of them.
To look at what could be, what ****ing ought to be, and to know it will never happen. That's agony.
And so I've come to realize the world is shit, humans are shit, and that those cheerful idealists are the luckiest ****ers on the planet.
