Essentially, I need a read (or possibly a re-read) list for the coming year.
Read something not associated with Star Wars.
The "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels by George R.R. Martin are ingenious and full of political manouvers, making them a possible enjoyable read for you. Branching further into the realm of Fantasy, I would recommend pretty much all novels written by Sir Terry Pratchett, who is possible one of the most underrated authors of our time - despite being quite successful. The Hussite Trilogy by Andrzej Sapkowski was also quite entertaining (need to reread that one) - aside from his "Witcher" saga, that is. Started reading the Lucifer Box novels by Mark Gatiss today - quite entertaining.
If you want some non-fictional input, I'd recommend "Who Am I – And If So, How Many?" by Richard David Precht. At least, if the English translation is as good as the original.
Game of Thrones is really cool but IMO The Dark Tower by Stephen King is even still a lot better, quite similar actually but main difference is that The Dark Tower is less political and more of an epic adventure, and focuses on just one character and a single quest that is made clear right from the beginning. But they are both similar with how they are both just really awesome books series and have really dark storylines and characters.

I don't believe in non-fiction. It rots the mind.
Precht is a German philosopher and - considering that position - rather entertaining.
I'll wait on Martin. People say he takes a zillion years to finish a novel and the anticipation is fatal.
That's about correct. You can read those novels again and again, though, just to find new details with every re-read.
But while waiting for Martin, there should be enough time to read the 39 Discworld novels Pratchett has produced during the past 30 years. 😉
Martin started suffering from "Wheel of Time Syndrome" in Feast for Crows and a Dance with Dragons. His first three books, especially Storm of Swords, were brilliant, but I feel he has lost some control of the plot.
Hopefully, the next one will have good pacing and bring everything together for the final book.
Discworld is - apparently - shit. At least what I have heard. Apparently Terry Pratchett wanted to make a sitcom but NBC would nto approve of pilot so he decided to make book series instead and base all of his characters and humerous storylines in fantasy setting. I Believe Nemebro pointed this out in VG social thread.
