Ah, but the brooding sadface moments are what really give him depth. Avellone can't write a deep character without making their lives edgy. Raul is not as bad as, say, Boone in this regard, but it is there.

Veronica's worried about the Brotherhood and thinking about how it can survive, she doesn't really brood over it.
She's rendered catatonic by their actions if you make certain choices in the quest, and even then she edgily angsts about it whenever it's brought up.
Not every tragic backstory is edgy. Get tf over yourself.
And her whole response to it is 'yeah whatevs I guess he was a douche or something'. And shes mainly drinking cuz she has ****all else to do.
She's drowning her sorrows because she's brooding over the knowledge that she will have to shut down the caravan that has her name printed on the side.A great source of buttangst for her.
And again, shes already pretty much dealt with all that by the time you meet her. The only thing she's still hung up about is the future of the Brotherhood and shes pretty proactive about the whole thing.
Naw, she's still buttsad about it, just not overtly. Being proactive does not mean she isn't edgy about it.

It deconstructs the nature getting stronger by killing enemies (Grinding, basically) by explicitly noting the protagonist you are controlling is a sociopathic mass murderer, and shows how unstable such a cool young man would have to be in order to do such things.
Compare to "Lawl you eat people's Force".
Its pretty dang cool (MotB). You can do some hardcore evil and subtle manipulations of your party members and in the end you go on to attack and eat several gods.
