Revan is proof that you don't need to explore every EU element. The reason the character is so popular is because it allowed fat, dumb, insecure nerds to assume the role of an uber-powerful genius warrior lover mechanic tactician guy.Like Thrawn, less is more.
Nah, it owes far more to the game being great than any of that. And the storytelling. The character is built up a lot more competently than you're suggesting. Throughout the game you hear people talk about Revan and he's built up as some legendary villain and mastermind. You see him in flashbacks and, lets be fair, a lot of the reason he's so memorable is his badass design. Then you get a brilliant reveal that YOU are Darth Revan, which instantly gives the player a power trip and is just a very memorable experience. blah blah etc.
But for the entire game you're NOT some genius tactician mechanic. Even after the reveal you're not that person. So thats not really it. Revan's so memorable because of great storytelling and the games popularity, not just a wish-fulfillment.

KotOR being great (which it is) and Revan's popularity being the result of wish-fulfillment are not mutually exclusive. Fact of the matter is, he's not a defined character, so interest in him is purely the result of wish-fulfillment.
He's a great idea. But he should have been left alone.
