10/10. Absolute genius. 👆
I fail to see how having one quirky character detracts from everything else the game does, nor how it is an inherently bad thing. It's basically Xenogears' example of an Ewok or something, it's hardly the most ridiculous thing in the world.
Xenogears, Xenosaga Episodes I-III and Xenoblade >>> anything Bioware or Obsidian have ever done, and you'll be able to add the upcoming Wii U game to that list soon enough. Mass Effect might just about be on par with the Xenosaga cell phone humour based Japanese exclusive spinoff game Xenosaga Freaks. Might be.

You're kidding, right? This is a joke.
That's kind of a ridiculous comment to make, if we're speaking about Mass Effect 1 (I would imagine the same would apply to 2 and 3 but I'll refrain from speaking about those as I haven't played them). Aside from having numerous gameplay flaws (which I addressed in this very thread a while back), the storytelling is hugely overrated, and nowhere near as complex or compelling as something like Xenogears, and the interactive elements are more superficial than anything else (and I hear Mass Effect 3 failed miserably at living up to the claims the developers had been making about how much you would be able to influence the storyline through your choices).
Xenogears has a wonderfully imagined mythology, very interesting and likable characters, sends you on whirlwind of emotion and intrigue and ties some very high concept themes into the plot and setting in extremely imaginative ways. It also has one of the more interesting turn based combat systems imo, and quite possibly the best soundtrack in videogame history. Xenogears is superior to ME in all ways other than technical specs.
Well I see you were talking specifically about the storytelling, however I maintain that it's hugely overrated in that department and it certainly wouldn't come close to being in my personal top 20. The likes of Xenogears, Xenosaga, the Infinity series, Braid, the Zero Escape series, and Metal Gear Solid are all vastly superior.
