Yep. Apparently there is a treaty between the Republic and the FO. That’s why the Resistance is fighting as the Republic refuses to go to war.

The First Order is the Empire. The Resistance is a disavowed group that fights because the Republic can't. No official support, but obviously backed. Classic storytelling and all that.

No. The GE is gone. The FO is just the biggest (or only) remnant left. Unsure, if the Republic is funding the Resistance but I doubt it. I remember hearing rumors about Snoke manipulating the Senate.

No way is the Resistance running on good faith and able to take out Starkiller. Someone in the Republic has to be funding that.
