That's a threat. A lot of barbaric things happened back then from a lot of people, and this is NOW the freaking 21st century, and muslims are still doing them.

I don't think that anyone has used the Crusades as a defense for the Islamic violence sweeping the globe. Many people realize just how barbaric and terrible the religion is.
The reason that the Crusades are brought up is to remind everyone that the Christian religion is not so very different. It was not long ago that the world felt the Christian threat. That it passed was not because of the divine grace of Christianity but because some dissidents broke out from beneath Christian rule. Lets hope that the Islamic version of the Enlightenment comes before World War III.
