Because as a band(collective), they were unmatched.
I disagree.
Neal Schon was a child prodigy and, as a teen, displayed more skill than most adult guitarists as demonstrated when he received offers from Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton to join their respective bands at age 15. Steve Perry was a countertenor, with an enormous range surpassing Axl Rose's, not to mention demonstrably greater skill with his voice in terms of pitch control, power, and live performance. Steve Smith has been a drumming staple and acclaimed percussionist for his technical ability (in the lists that I've seen, he's been compared to Rush's Neil Peart).
Spoiler:
Journey > GnR

and more of a rock buff.

Because you say so?
My father, who is older than either one of us, says you aren't more of a rock buff, so I win. ^_^

Still though, there are VERY few that are better than Slash. Only Eddie Van Halen and Joe Satriani come to mind.
Steve Vai, Steve Lukather, and Neal Schon curbstomp Slash in terms of technical aptitude and capability.
