So today, Onestart at IU university wanted me to select my ethnicity for their "records". There was no option given for "other", and since I always select that and write in "American" I was a bit stumped. Tomorrow I am calling the Dean of Students to complain.
Indiana University is required to report to the Department of Labor, each year, employee data by race, ethnicity, and military status based on categories set by the federal government (See: Federal Register Guidelines vol. 72, No. 202). Indiana University does not report individual employee data to the federal government but we do report the total number of employees in various categories within each institution. The federal government recently changed the ethnicity reporting categories for employees and, as a result, you have the opportunity to update your data. With the new reporting categories, you may now identify yourself by ethnic group (either Hispanic/Latino or not Hispanic/Latino) and by one or more racial groups (American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African-American, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, White). Starting with the 2010-2011 academic year, all institutions will report employee data to the Department of Labor using the new categories.
In addition to updating your ethnicity information, we are also providing you with an opportunity to update your military status.
You notice the options they gave, included "White".
What kind of ethnicity is "White?" White is a color. Who decides who is white?
Ridiculous.
I am going to select "Native American" if they force me to choose one. But first the chat with the Dean.
What were they supposed to do? There's like 30 different types of races that fit under "white". That's like getting offended because they don't list all the African nationalities instead of just "black" or "African-American". You realize that "Native American" and "Latino" are not races either, right? Their blanket categories used to cover dozens of ethnicities.

No offense, but that's dumb. The reason why they ask you that in the first place is for the sake of statistics and research. Asking you what race you are when filling out an application isn't racist in any way shape or form.
No, it isn't dumb. There are no human subspecies.
