Hence, "smarter" isn't really the word that comes to mind when I think of people in the 50's. What comes to mind is "Ignorant as ****"... there's more to being smart then mathematics and physics and other academics, and even then, the amount of literate people has jumped by like at least 30% since the 1950's... so to say that people were smarter back in the day is hard to take as valid from any point of view.
