Reparations for slavery in the US

Started by jaden10110 pages

this concept is as utterly ridiculous as tony blairs insistance on going around the world apologising for everything the British have ever done

which even stretched to apologising to Japan for ww2...despite the fact the japanese had the worst record for treating POW's of any conflict including Germany in ww2

no cause we are joking around all the time, unlike ya'll we have fun with name calling ermm and how are we the most racist to ourselves? ever heard of the KKK?

Refering to yourselves as "niggas" in pretty much every "rap" song for starters. Black on Black crime has always been an issue. Then of course there's the self-segregation in pretty much every other aspect. Media, clothing, food, politics, educational funding, music, television.

We have no equivalents to BET, Black Enterprise, FUBU, Black History Month, any of that. We don't need them, and not because white people have had it easy all along, because the majority of mainstream America is already about equality, not segregation.

There's a difference between pride in one's heritage and outright ignorant segregation. The KKK are a joke. Not only has the organization been powerless for decades now, they're about as old of news as slavery itself. Next thing you know, they'll be the next reparations target.

I agree with this.

The concept of "reparation" after so long strikes me as symbolically and economically as useless. Far better to admit "yes, bad things happened, and we can't change that. Far better to try and make sure it never happens again by using such money to help those who are facing social, cultural, educational segregation today."

It's not our place to pay for someone else's education outside that of the standard grade school. That's why we pay taxes, and why there's the state funding for education. Why not just start a United Negro School Fund that isn't specific to college, aside from the fact that it's another segregation issue, if education is so important.

If all the other attempts at raising awareness of whatever instances you can think of aren't working, maybe it's not because the teaching isn't being pushed, but maybe the kids just don't care, nor do the parents?

Equality boo hoo. We (whites) held them down for so long, maybe they need a little extra boost to get back to where they should be if societe was equal. Segregation my a$$. White people can't run around screaming "segregation" or "racism." The point is , minorities are still not treated equally. Instead of wasting time on pointles givaways, maybe we could work to make equality a pirority.

I didn't hold them down. I would appreciate if you refrain from using "we" when not talking for "us".

I ****ing hate the word "minority". Just because someone's in the minority doesn't mean they can't make a difference on their own. It's used way too often to get preferrential treatment or aid.

Why should I feel obligated to help out a culture that is obviously ungrateful for the freedom they live under? Going as far as to want payback from people who had nothing to do with something they never endured. Is that equality, or is that blatant ignorance?

My point is that the "minorities" won't ever be treated fairly, and it's as much their fault as it is the us "evil white oppressors". There are too many double standards that have been sliding through for the sake of a backlash, the likes of which have been taken advantage of, and as you can see, they're still not satisfied.

I'll make equality a priority in my life when they make the abolishment of self-segregation theirs.

Oh, my God, this post is a riot!!!! I skimmed it at first, but didn't realize how bad it was until I read Bardock and Cory's responses. 😂

I need an extra boost, too. My grandfather was a minimum-wage fireman and because of that, my dad got off to a slow start in providing riches for me. Check, please! (true story)

Anyone who thinks paying reparations is a good idea should lick my crack.

That's probably the best solution, right there, but ya know..suggesting anything about "crack" and "black people", and the Rainbow Coalition will be knocking on your front doo....oh shit...

*goes to answer his door*

Awww, c'mon you mean old kraut. You're just as oppressive as the rest of us honkeys!

Dear World,

I would also like an extra boost in the automotive department. Because I was cruelly trained on an Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais, I have been at a disadvantage and ultimately evolved into the following glamour vehicles: Ford Escort, Ford Escort, Ford Focus.

Please deliver my fully-loaded MiniVan to my door tonight. I would thank you, but I'm too busy celebrating to do so. Go **** yourself instead, but only after I get the vehicle.

HAHAHA! Oh, this has got to be the funniest thing I've ever heard today. Reparations? Puhleeze!

There is satirical joke in the movie Barbershop about this topic. If I remenber correctly the character play by Cedric the Entertainer says something similar to this "Reperation, Preparation, whatever. If they gives money that only means one thing....Cadillac will become #1 dealer in the world"

Give them Jobs that's the best reparations anyone can get.

bring jobs to the ghetto. not everyone can work at macdonalds.

Apparently, the movement for this is growing

What do you people think of this? I mean really, should the descendants of one group of people be forced to pay money to the descendants of another group of people for something that ended over 140 years ago (supposedly)? This issue certainly not black and white (no pun intended).

There is no doubt that slavery is/was wrong.

However....

How will paying some
people money erase this blight from our history?

Who pays the reparations? The US government? That means people who never had anything to do with slavery, and many of us who's ancestors had nothing to do with slavery will pay, including blacks who pay taxes (which will be the source of any reparations) will pay. The blacks will in essence be paying themselves reparations.

And who will be the benificiaries? Anyone who is black? Anyone who says they are black. There are a large number of blacks living in the US who's ancestors were not slaves. What if I look white but say I had an ancestor who was a slave in Virginia in the late 1700s making me 1/32 black? Am I entitled to reparations also?

What about the contributions of African countries to the slave trade (which was enormous)? Is the US going to invade Africa to ensure they pay their fair share of the reparations?

My ancestors may well have been slaves during the Roman Empire. Should the US invade Italy and force it to pay reparations to me?

And what about all the present day slaves (yes, they exist) in America? Who is going to free them, let alone pay reparations

Once again I'll admit slavery was/is wrong but can't everyone see how ludicrous this reparations idea is? It will only serve to further harm our badly damaged country and make race relations worse than they obviously are while really doing nothing for the black community.

It's time to move on and deal with our current day issues, of which we have many.

This only makes me want to assinate a couple of important figures here.

I doubt I'm responsible for what my great great great great great grandfather did 140 years ago. The black community needs to grow up.

thats a bunch of poo. they need to go out and get a real job and stop forcing people who have nothing to do with that crap to pay worthless reparations.

My ancestors were French people who immigrated to the US in the 1600s and were persecuted and discriminated against until the early 1900s. My grandfather grew up speaking French in the US and was discriminated against. My mother wasn't allowed to speak French in public and not allowed to take French in high school because her dad was afraid of the same persecution he faced.
Now, tell me that I deserve a reparation because of something my dead grandfather went through. Exactly. It didn't happen to me, and slavery didn't happen to you, and neither of us deserve any money. Apparently we've been able to forget about what US citizens put French Americans through and have now made them equal to the rest of us.
Now why can't we do that with black people? Continuously people who support these reparations and the like make hypocrites out of themselves and instead of making blacks and whites the same, they make everyone even more different.

vecause we were hanged, beaten, taken from our homes, given different names, put with rival tribes, not taught english or how to write, and everyone spoke a different language, and barerly ate

well pretty much cause most of them have attitudes, and committing black on white crime would get us life in prison not matter what we do, and we like certain music so that lead up to the liking of certain clothes and etc. due to what the celebs did.
every month is white history month except february, so no you don't need them but 'we' do its not equality, most movies the black guy dies first til we figured it out, most TV shows there is no one black.
we do take pride in our heritage but, after people started getting interested into rap, hip hop, and R&B, many who didn't have jobs just because they were black went to that and carried a chip on their shoulders from racism, and we can't let it out on whites cause we would be racist and blamed by the police for everything, there is still racism out there cause we still have racist coaches, office secreteries, teachers, cops (all of them are ermm) just plain racist people. we are atleast able to say something to each other without going crazy
ex. if we say shut up nigga to another, we might argue a bit but, most of the time we are playing
now if you were arguing to one of your own kind, you said shut up cracker. ya'll would be fighting so to tell you the truth though you take pride in your heritage you're also ignorant about someone else of your own heritage making fun of it
