proof BluRay is winning over hd dvd!

Started by krazie8355 pages

I heard that Sony will eventually stop making DVDs and simply make the Blu Ray disc so I assume that we the customer are pretty much going to have to chose one format now HD or Blu Ray. 🙁

I have so many Dvds its not funny I am going to have to buy everything again....ok I WONT but I will buy some of my favroite films again. I will prolly side with the Blu Ray Disc over the HD.

This got me thinking, do you think it's possible that the war will be neverending? Perhaps the movie industry took a cue from the video game industry?

Three major video game consols. Take your pick for which selection you want to choose from.

Unlikely- many remember VHS and Betamax.

Watching movies is not quite like games consoles. For example, one of the main drives behind the seperation of console formats is that the makers of the consoles also have a direct stake in the making of the games- admittedly, Sony less so, which is why there was some talk of single-format gaming being possible with the release of the Playstation and PS2, though not now with the bad press that the PS3 is getting.

Whereas loads of companies make movie players who have absolutely nothing to do with the production of movies.

Combine that with the less specialist approach the movie market has compared to the video games market, and there is a very natural inclination for a single format in movies.

However, returning to the single games format again- it is still kinda heading that way. PC, PS2 and X-Box all ran off similar formats, different only by on-disc coding, and only this new development is preventing the same from happening again.

The only really odd one out is Nintendo, and the single thing that justifies their completely different format is their particular approach to gaming, which is unique in many ways.

Can't really do that with a movie player.

All i know is that the clarity improvement is amazing. I was watching a display at BestBuy and they had 2 Sony HDTV's setup, same size, everything. And then they had 50 First Dates on a DVD player and then the Blu-ray version of the movie playing side-by-side. It was amazing. Really makes me wish i had the money for an HDTV.

Just because something has more backing that hardly makes it a superior format. Most technophiles and reviewers said that HD-DVD looks much better than BluRay. BluRay will probably win the format war because each PS3 is going to have BluRay capability. That automatically gives them an advantage. I stll think that HD is the superior format.

This gives a huge slap on the PS3 and Blu-ray:

Blu-Ray shortage could halve PS3 shipments
Matt Martin 16:09 31/08/2006

Targets may be hampered by slow manufacturing process

Sony may be forced to drastically cut its PS3 unit shipments for the launch of the console in November, due to a shortage of blue laser diodes.

The manufacturing arm of Sony has reportedly suspended shipment of the diodes to its customers making HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movie players, in order to use them in the construction of its own PlayStation 3.

Manufacturers of blue laser diodes, which feature in the optical drives of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players, have been unable to improve yield rates, according to a report on DigiTimes. This has led to the shortage of diodes, with the supply not expected to be back on track until Spring 2007.

Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America recently clarified that the company hopes to ship two million units of the PlayStation 3 worldwide for the console launch, with a further two million due by the end of the year.

These guys are really slow to get this news, lol. The blue diode shortage has been an issue for about 2 months now. Not only that, but they haven't even started manufacturing the PS3 in Japan yet.

Not for a long, long time, if ever.

I hope none of the format's win i love dvds they are very cheap

I bought my first HDTV last March - a Samsung 30" CRT slimtube ( I still don't trust Plasma or LCD), then two months later got the Samsung HDMI upgrading player. I am set for a long time, and will wait for this idiotic war to end. The prices for those players - $1,100?? It's like the early days of Laserdisc players - one of which I bought at a big discount.

Aha! I would like the pro-Blu-rayPS3 apologiest to explain this!

No 1080p PS3 Games Yet, Says Sony

The PlayStation 3 may be capable of 1080p, but there are no games that support it right now. The company also clarifies the importance of HDMI for its self-styled full HD

Sony took flack in the press earlier this week when it emerged that the HDMI-equipped PlayStation 3 would ship without an HDMI cable. This would have potential consequences for Blu-ray movie playback, which the US PlayStation 3 site says requires an HDMI cable for 1080p. But Sony has today confirmed with Kikizo that this isn't necessarily so.

Both models of the PlayStation 3 will be able to play games and movies in 1080p, SCEE's Jonathan Fargher told Kikizo. Whether you're watching Resident Evil: Apocalypse or playing Gran Turismo HD, you'll be able to enjoy a full 1080p signal through component cables.

According to Sony, the official US PlayStation 3 site's caveat that the HDMI connection is required for 1080p signals in Blu-ray movies is fallout from uncertainty over the Image Constraint Token - a next-generation anti-piracy measure.

Kikizo reported earlier this year that Sony has seemingly neutered the ICT, allowing full HD signals to bypass the HDMI requirement.

As it turns out, though, unless you're using the PlayStation 3 mainly as a Blu-ray movie player, you're not going to be getting much 1080p content anyway.

Sony has made an issue of pointing out that 1080p, which the Xbox 360 is incapable of, is the Holy Grail of "full HD". As it stands now, the only game that is running in 1080p, said Fargher, is Gran Turismo HD - a tech demo crafted by Polyphony to showcase what the system is capable of.

This is in line with our earlier report, where a development source told Kikizo that, "even with [final hardware] in mind, reaching good frame rates at 1080p with next-gen graphics is almost impossible. Instead many developers, ourselves included, are reworking so they run at 720p. "

Whether you'll ever be able to buy Gran Turismo HD is up in the air. However, Sony did confirm that an announcement would be made at the Tokyo Game Show later this month.

Yet again! The claims of the so-called "technology" that has fuel Sony to claim they possess can't even provided 1080p games....which leaves to ponder...what about the movies?

This is the least of their worries. They've had to delay the PS3 launch in Europe until MARCH OF 2007. When they plan to launch in November, there's only going to be 100,000 for Japan and 200,000 for the US. Reports have come in saying that they'll release in Japan, wait and see how it sells there, then DELAY THE US LAUNCH!

Tsk tsk, Sony.

Apart from it said that the release dates for Japan and America would be unaffected.. and would be released sometime in November.

Universal Studios Boss Gives Thumbs Down to Blu-ray

Brandon Hill (Blog) - September 17, 2006 3:12 PM

It looks as though Sony just can't catch a break these days in the news. Last week we learned that Sony was delaying the European launch of its PlayStation 3 from November 17 to March of 2007 along with the announcement that an initial batch of 500,000 total units would be available for the November 11 Japanese launch and November 17 North American launch. The launch delay/shipment reduction is due to Sony's problems with manufacturing blue laser diodes used by the Blu-ray drive on the PS3.

Well today, we learn of even more bad news for the Sony camp. Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, came out swinging against the Blu-ray standard calling HD DVD the "hands down" winner in the next generation movie formats. "Look at the blogs, look at the reviews by the early adopters and even look at the mainstream media – HD DVD has maintained its first-to-market advantage and delivered on the promises of providing the best high definition image and sound quality at the best value for consumers today," said Kornblau.

Kornblau is likely referencing three head-to-head comparison reviews done on Blu-ray and HD DVD versions of 'Training Day,' 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' and 'Rumor Has It....' In those comparison tests done by High-Def Digest in early August, HD DVD clearly came out ahead of Blu-ray in image quality. The Blu-ray titles featured increased noise/artifacting and darker overall color casting. Issue of cropping also popped up with the three Blu-ray titles tested.

However, a more recent test by High-Def Digest produced more promising results from the Blu-ray camp. 'Firewall,' 'Lethal Weapon,' 'Blazing Saddles' and 'Full Metal Jacket' were tested this time around. With the exception of 'Full Metal Jacket,' the titles this time around used VC-1 compression instead of MPEG-2 resulting in much improved image quality across the board:

But to summarize, with this batch there is no clear "winner." If last time Blu-ray took more than its fair share of slings and arrows over picture quality and the format's reliance (up until now) on MPEG-2, this time the more level playing field has helped close the gap between Blu-ray and HD DVD. If nothing else, our second Blu-ray versus HD DVD face-off strongly indicates that what some people had declared a format war won is still far from over.

So while Kornblau is right in pointing out HD DVD advantages in pricing and availability, the image quality debate is still alive and well.

Its all about money nothing else and am not upgrading !!

£999.99 for blue ray player ❌

The Ps3 just flat out fails. 😆

Where would all this lead! Oh Boy 😮

anyone got a hd tv ?? whats the pic like ??

None of you know anything. Only what you are told. Quoting an article means nothing no matter how reliable the source.

Everyone keeps bringing up irrelevant things stuff like price. Of chores blu-ray and HD-DVD are expensive they are brand new. DVD was that expensive when it first came out and look at it now, I wouldn't even care if you pissted on my dvd player because it cost me 30 bucks.

You have to just kick back and wait for which ever one gains the support of the majority. Then wait for the supply to overflow the demand. Then the price will drop and babam new technology for cheap.

If there are problems with Blu-ray they will fix them or it won’t be around. If there are problems with HD-dvd they will fix them or it won’t be around.

so everyone should sit back chill out and stop pretending like you know what is going to happen because you don't. Quote me any article you want it doesn't mean anything except you can read what someone else wrote.

But one thing is for sure, and that is that nothing is for sure.
