All clues point to Jack and Elizabeth

when you think about it right..Jack must have seen his compass pointing to Port Royal at the beginning so thats why he didn't go there....and then he learns Liz is in danger from Will and he mentions the compass to him. It suddenly clicks in Jack's head that he cares for her and guesses that his compass is pointing at her when he looks at it...But right now he's like "I want to SAVE MYSELF!"...

If he had no clue where his compass was pointing to after this realization, he would have gone to the location it said wouldn't he?..but he knows its pointing slap bang at her so he doesnt follow it (or does he? "off to Tortuga" and guess who is heading straight there as he says that)...when he's sitting in the Tavern he's trying to make it point to where he thinks it should point instead of where his heart is telling him..he says "I KNOW what i want!" and he waves his hand infront of it to try ane make it work...maybe he thinks that if he can get Liz with him his compass will start to work for him? Because if he gives his heart what he wants then the compass should point to where he wants it to..

I'm not saying he was trying to make that compass point at Liz in the tavern..he just headed to tortuga because he might have followed it..and whilst it was there it was going screwy because Liz was moving around Tortuga..so he thought..ok now she's here. tell me what I "REALLY" want to know..

dont you think it would have been confirmation that it was pointing to her once he saw her there just after it went all screwy on him?..

LOL its hard to explain....I'm just trying to figure out WHY Jack wont follow the compass. If he didnt realize that it was pointing to something other than the chest..then he would have followed it...but he doesn't..he's determined not to go to where its telling him to. He must have had a realization (the canibal Island scene?) that it was Liz it was pointing to.

Well he listens to the compass at first so he has a heading..and then he sits down with a map to plot where the compass is pointing to..he uses that sharp thing to do it..it must have landed slap bang on a location. he looks at it and gets irritated and he KNOWS the key/chest cant be there..where could it have pointed to to make him react like that? I think it was Port Royal

He stops following it after that...

and then later Will says to him that Liz is in danger and they need the compass..then Jack literally stops in his tracks..I get the feeling that he realized the compass was pointing towards Liz at port royal..not because he knew she was in danger..just because he cares for her..and wants her in his life..and now that she is in danger he actually realizes cares for her..and thats why his compass is pointing there ..he shows no care towards Will in this scene, so he must have realized he's not the reason the compass pointed to port Royal the only other person he cares about there is Liz.

after this he seems to know that his compass is pointing at her so he is determined not listen to it..he still thinks he should want the chest more..and he's trying to make the compass point at what he thinks he wants more (the chest) but its not he says to it "I KNOW what I want!" as in "I WANT TO SAVE MYSELF I dont want Liz" the compass still points to her though 😂

It's basically just a heart VS Brain thing with Jack...I think on the cannibal Island scene he realizes what his heart wants and he knows that the compass is pointing to it (Liz)..but he wont follow because he's only listning to his brain at the moment..which is "I want to save myself"

If he didn't know that it was pointing to her location then he would have followed where it was telling him to go (thinking it was showing him the key/chest)..but he didn't follow it because he knew it was pointing to her.

OR he may have been following where the compass was pointing to ..because by the time he was going to go to tortuga Liz was heading there too..the only thing to contradict that is the fact that we dont see him looking at the compass to get to Tortuga...and he also doesn't follow it once its screwing around in the tavern..I'm wondering if he realized Liz was there..but was trying to ignore the fact (Liz moving around in Tortuga makes the compass point everywhere) then he says "I know what i want!" as in trying to get the thought out of his mind..

wait a sec..katelovespirate or someone who has access to the film..does the compass settle on a set location when Jack is plotting where it's pointing to on the map? or was it pointing in all different locations in that scene?

yeh that was at first when he was standing on the deck....but later he is looking at where its pointing to on the map..

I dont know but he gets really irritated when he sees exactly where he is heading.

remember he was using calipers to plot exactly where the compass was pointing to on the map?..it must have landed slap bang on a set Island/location..and he got irritated I have a feeling that it pointed to Port Royal..he must have been having an inkling to go back there to see his friends(Liz) but he thought that saving himself was more important so he doesn't listen to where his heart is telling him to go..

If that was any other Island appart from Port Royal. He would have gone there thinking it was the location of the key/chest..

He gets upset cuz it won't point to anything for himm...because he is confused...because he thought he knew what he wanted...his freedom and the key and the chest...but yet the compass won't stop spinning for him....that's why in Tortuga he is like holding the compass saying "i know what I want, I know what I want..." but gets frustrated cuz the compass IS NOT WORKING FOR HIM>>>because he no longer knows what he really wants....so what he thought he wanted is, in fact, not what he wants...or else the compass would work....according to the script...the first time the compass works is when Liz holds it for the first time after Jack places it in her hand...Lovelyone...I don't think there is anyone on this thread that wants Jack and Liz together more than me...but I don't think the compass is pointing to Liz before she shows up...I think the cabin scene you are talking about...he gets aggravated cuz the compass won't stop spinning....but I think he does think about Liz when he says "Why is the rum always gone?".....But Jack definitely is wanting Liz...he just doesn't know it, yet....or, on the other hand...maybe you are right, LovelyOne...cuz there is the scene in Tia's cabin when she says, "The compass you bartered from me, it cannot lead you to this?" (if this is what you want most in this world, read between the lines)...."Maybe, Why?" (Jack implies here that the compass is not working for him)....tia:"Oh, Jack Sparrow don't know what he want....or he do know, but is loathe to claim it as his own." very big clue here....what is Jack loathed to claim as his own...can't be the chest, can't be the heart, can't be the pearl, can't be his material objects, can't be the key....so that only leaves....a woman.....Elizabeth....ah, this movie is so confusing....are all the things we are seeing what Disney wants us to see....I'm getting frustrated with this...cuz to me it all seems so clear...but then again...maybe I'm misreading everything....Can't wait for the DVD to see if the characters are really thinking what we think they are thinking....LOL

He might actually know he wants Liz..but he's trying to shut her out because he wants to save himself.So the compass isn't working because he already knowswhat his heart wants most and it's not showing him the means to save his own skin because thats not what he really wants either ...so the compass is in a state of..

I was thinking..that he actually knows he wants Liz..but is pretending not to so the compass is not showing him what he "truly desires" s..because he already knows??..and its also not showing him the means to save his own skin because thats not what he really wants either..

Great, so true....Jack probably can't believe the compass isn't working for him....he's confused disoriented...Jack just doesn't seem like himself....as Mr. Gibbs says, : "something's got Jack vexed..." Jack is definitely unsure of himself during the first half of this movie....

Jack is like.."shut up heart(liz)..come on brain(key/chest)"..and the compass cant help him there because it doesnt show you what your brain wants it only shows you what your heart wants most...and he already knows what his heart wants. So the compass cant point and settle anywhere..

thats why tia says..jack sparrow "does not know what he wants..or do know"

IMO, at the beginning of 2 the compass is vacilating between:

1. the pearl- because Jack realizes his 13 years are up but he wants to remain captain

2. Singapore- or wherever his father is, because sometimes, especially when his crew is nagging him, he wishes life were a little easier

3. various women he has known- because he is suddenly beginning to long for a real relationship

4. a great number of other things...

i dont think its until Jack first hears about Will and Elizabeth not yet being married that he begins to realize he might still be attracted to her... and definately not until he sees her that he starts really falling for her.

Isn't that a great scene...in Tortuga...there is Mr. Gibbs recruiting these poor hapless souls..who by the way, Jack is going to trade their souls so he can live....while Jack is in the background studying that compass.."i know what I want, I know what I want..." you know he's got to be contemplating what Tia said to him in her cabin...plus by this time he does realize that Will and Liz were not married, since Will has showed up and is on the Flying Dutchman...
