I more meant is it wrong to call the fashion "punk"?

I said yes. It is.

Think about it, Bardock. Fashion is the antithesis of punk, punk wasn't about a fashion, it was a counter-culture. It was a mishmash of many people with many different, errant styles. It wasn't some fashion.

Punk was the music, not the fashion. The fashion was called punk because those people liked punk. Just like people who dress a certain way are called emo because they listen to "emo". The funny thing is, punk back then was actually punk, "emo" isn't emo nowadays. So it's a pointless label on many labels.

I hate how some bands today think they are punk. Green Day is not punk.

Green Day have more traceable connection to punk rock than any "emo" band today has connections to real emo. Right down to the way they play and, in the more uptempo (mostly older) songs, the way Billie Jo Armstrong sings. They're not solely a punk band, but they have traceable elements.

That's a fact.

Nah, they are too pretty to be punk.

But it's not wrong because of that. The fashion is undeniably called punk. It just is. Fact....fact.

Why do you do that? You're arguing something we both know. Yes, I know what it's called, but it's wrong to call it that.

Do you do this just to get involved in debates?

Okay..one step further...it's not wrong to call it that.

It is, because that's not what it is. It's a fashion associated with punk, it's not punk. Punk was a genre of music.

And gay was a synonym of happy. And *** was a pile of wood. Coke was a plant. etc.

It's not wrong. Words can mean different things. They evolve. Or are created. And there is nothing wrong about it. Punk is a type of fashion. It is. And it is not wrongly though, it just is.

No, but you did go on about them being traceble yadda yadda, I still disagree. And I did read your post. Green Day to me is more of what they call 'alternative' music these days. Although, today's 'alternative' music is actually 'main stream'. Punk was an era, like classic rock was, in my opinion. And the true 'alternative' music was back in the hay day of Depeche Mode, Erasure, The Smiths, those sort of bands.

There's no disagreeing. Right down to the guitar work and the melody Billie Jo sings in circa Dookie, it's very similar to original British punk bands. That's a fact, and you can feel free to study up and check that. It's not a matter of preference.

Green Day aren't alternative, and that further proves that you have no clue what you're on about. Everyone and their mother likes Green Day, they're one of the most popular mainstream bands of recent memory. They're about as alternative as Foo Fighters.

Green Day have become just a general rock band now. Which I guess they've always been, but earlier, they had very noticeable traces to original punk, and still do in the odd song. Not preference wise, playing wise, construction and structure wise.

No, you're simply incorrect and you're the one now being pointlessly literal.

Words can literally be created, but they wouldn't be credible. However, that's not the case with "Emo" or "Punk". That's incorrect use of existing words. Emo means, and has always meant, emotive hardcore. The only reason it's become synonymous with what kids connect it to is because they don't know what it originally means.

They use emo to mean emotional, which is retarded, because sadness is just one emotion. Emo, by their rationale, is applicable to happy people. If sadness is pivotal, then call them "depressives" or something. Something applicable.

Punk is a music genre, the fashion associated with it is just that. A fashion associated with punk, a culture associated with punk. To call it punk is to miss the point of punk music.

Look, I don't doubt that it is stupid or retarded. It jsut is not wrong. Words are used as they are used. Maybe it is slang. But it is certainly not wrong.

It is incorrect, technically, yes. Illogical also.

Study up? 😆

I saw Green Day in concert for myself at one of the early Lalapaloozas in the early nineties, so I do know what I'm talking about. The fact that you said to 'study up' just proves to me that you don't know what you are talking about. I don't need to study up to state my opinion on something, and I don't care what some writer for a music magazine or website says about Green Day's ties with real punk rock music.

You might be right...I was under the impression they would have it in the dictionary..well, they don't.
