Wow. That Portland team you just described was about a decade off from when Dunleavy coached the Blazers (and they lost to teams such as the Pistons and the Bulls in the Finals during those days). Rick Adelman coached those guys (and for your information Duckworth was a 2-time all-star 😉 ).
Wow! I was that far off? Still one of my favorite teams tho. Remember them loosing to the bulls. Especially the game where Jordan went off from the 3 pt line just to prove to everyone that he had the range.
I also remember them losing to the Lakers in a conference final, that game was made famous by Magic's throwing of the basketball down the court and telling everyone not to touch it so the final seconds of the game would run off the clock.
I also remember a game against Bird's Celtics which went into triple overtime. Like I said this team was involved in a lot of great games.
Yeah that's true he was but his career numbers really didn't justify that. He averaged 12 pts for his career. The reason why he made in as an all star was because as is always the case the all star team is chosen by position. We all know the center position is not selected from a very talented pool of players. I remember when just recently Ilgauskus was chosen as an all-star because of his position and many people didn't agree with that and felt he didn't deserve it. Hell, I remember when Mark Eaton, Bill Cartwright, Manute Bol, George Muresan and Greg Ostertag were selected as all stars, does that necessarily mean that they were All-Star caliber players?
[i] Dunleavy coached the Blazers to two Conference finals where they lost to the champs (took the 2000 Lakers to game 7 and only lost in the last 2 minutes). He won the Coach of the Year award in 1999 and came in 3rd for this years voting. I don't think it would be very fair to call him a bad coach. His credentials are certainly no worse than his opposing coach, Mike D'Antoni's. [/B]
I still think he'd be better suited as an assistant coach and I feel the same way about Adelman btw. These guys have had their chances, they've had talented teams before and were never able to bring that championship in the end, it's time to step down and allow someone else a chance. It reminds me of the Nelson and Avery situation in Dallas, this could still be Donnie's team trying to win a championship but Donnie realized it was time to step down and give Avery a shot and look at how good that teams doin now?
As far as D'antoni, at least he knows how to play to his team's strengths. Run and gun, full speed ahead, it's as simple as that.
