I am officially jobless!!

So three days ago, I called into work because I didn't have anyone to watch my kid. Everyone was either sick, or just plain unavailable because of work or prior engagements. So, I have sick time on the books, and I usually NEVER miss work unless I'm very sick, and I call in to my lieutenant and explain my situation. The following is pretty much what was said over the phone:

"Sir, I have absolutely nobody to watch my daughter. I won't be able to come in tonight."

"Okay. I understand, however you're going to have to bring in a doctor's excuse when you come back to work."

"But I'm not sick, sir. I just don't have anyone to babysit. Why do I need a doctor's excuse?"

"That's just the way it works. We need a valid excuse, otherwise it won't be justifiable."

"Lieutenant, I'm not going to spend $20 on a visit to my doctor for a note. Even if it is a co-pay, I'm not going to throw my money away like that."

"Then you can expect a diciplinary when you come back to work."

"For what reason?!?!?"

"For failure to prove justification of absence."

"I already told you!! I don't have a sitter!!"

"That's not my problem."

"Okay. Later."

So yesterday I went to my unit and turned in all of my uniforms and my state I.D. along with my letter of resignation. I have more than enough money in my bank account to sustain me until I find a new job, plus I'll get a compensatory check for all of my overtime, sick, and holiday hours. Now, about an hour ago, I got a call from my assistant warden. He says that he wants me to come in and sit down for a discussion about what happened so we can try to straighten this out. I'm thinking that this can be a good opportunity for me to ask for more. What say you guys?

Kinder-care

I refuse to use child care. Only people I know, family & friends, will watch my kid. Plus, daycare is outrageously high.

I wouldn't go back to work for them as they wanted you to lie about the reason you were off and didn't let you take the time off you deserved, even though it was for a very important reason.

Any place you work should understand that your kid is the most important thing in you life, and if they don't they don't deserve you. I understand not wanting to put you kid in childcare, with all the horror stories and sick people out there we don't trust them with our kids either.

Good luck! But before I would agree to go back I would make sure they understood that it could happen again and that THEY should handle it diffrently.

I think it's pretty clear that the only excusable absence at your place of employment is if you are yourself sick.

If you don't like that policy, get another job.

I'm not trying make myself look all special, but I was a DAMN good officer. I never had a disciplinary, I always had high reviews, and I was almost a straight shot for a promotion to sergeant. For them to treat me like that is inexcusable, IMO. What they need to understand is that I have a life outside of that uniform. An infinitley much more important life, at that. That's an example, at its most, of treating your employees like shit.

Bull. Because I have called in before, even when I wasnt sick, and nobody ever said anything. It's an unjust policy, IMO, because whats the point of having sick time on the books if you have to have a note from your doctor?

If I were you I would just ask for a copy of the policy's regarding time off and family. Them asking for a note in my opinion isn't an attempt to punish you with a 20$ fine but to make sure perhaps some of the other folks aren't just making up excuses to use sicktime.

Good luck with the job.

I suppose if they offered you more money to go back and work for them I would suggest you go for it. But then again they might put you in the same position later on.

I have a Commercial Driver's License. I might try to go work at the Coca-Cola plant as a driver. My dad knows a guy who works there. The pay isn't bad, at all. They start at $15 an hour for CDL drivers, but it's hard to get hired there, so I hear.

They wouldnt offer me more money, because its a state agency and your pay goes up depending on your time in. However, they would most likely offer to transfer me to another unit. But, IMO, that would mean just going to a whole new pile of bullshit.

You should've called in well. As in, I'm too well to come to work today. Then write yourself a note explaining how good you feel about not being at work.

What an utterly ridiculous situation that they put you in. I can sympathize.

You DO have to go in and talk to them, most certainly. They know that any human rights tribunal or court (we call them labour laws in Canada) would smack them six ways from Sunday for doing what they did.

I don't know that I'd go in there with the attitude of 'expecting' more, though...that could put you in a frame of mind that is not conducive for a positive resolution. Go in their open minded, and hope for the best.

I say go in, see what they have to say, and make ur descision from there. They may try evrything to make it ok, or you can have another opportunity to tell them off.

Talk to assistant warden first. Explain your case and I'm sure things will get straighten up. Don't ask for more...that would just lead to question your issue.

You're a cop?

Just take your kid to work with you next tim.... 😮‍💨

You gave up your job over a $20 copay? Then, you want to ask for a payraise? HOLY F*CK you are a dumbass.
