Its good to see that this issue has been settled.
Jean amputated the infected HCT future.
She then materialized the 616 universe into the "hospital" (White Hot Room) for treatment (in the process demonstrating control over the atomic structure of an entire reality in the palm of her hand.
Jean then grows this badly wounded universe a new future by altering past events (Scotts reactions) thereby growing a new future to replace the "diseased" one she amputated.
The reason this feat couldnt be achieved merely through time travel and mind control is because without having first amputated the future, altering events would merely have caused a divergent timeline (leaving Sublime to remain a threat in reality) as the future is set in stone as we've seen illustrated by characters like Rachel and Cable. The HCT future wouldve still existed alongside the alternate one created.
For an example in continuity. Look at what happened with the Age Of Apocalypse. When Bishop travelled back in time at the end of that Saga and stopped Legion from killing Xavier, that never got rid of the AOA timeline. As we saw through Nate Greys trips back to that timeline in his series, the AOA anniversary revisit, plus the Exiles trips to that timeline in their title, it merely carried alongside the main timeline of 616.
By amputating the infected future first, altering past events meant that a new future grew alone from the main timeline.
Hope that ends any attempts to deride the feat by saying it could be achieved by merely time travelling and using telepathy. 🙂
